Sex Offender Turns to Gaming

The Global Gaming League has a piece up about a recently-arrested sex offender who joined various gaming groups and clans in order to solicit sexually-explicit pictures from young gamers or even attempt to make contact with them in person. George "Spike" Finley had previously been arrested twice on similar charges: in 1998 for sexual interference with a 13-year-old, and last year for possession of child pornography. Last week, he was arrested again for violating the terms of his parole, which stipulated that he may not have any contact with children.

The Spike incident is different than other sports-oriented encounters of this nature, where a coach takes advantage of young players. Logically, to be a coach, one should have some sort of proficiency or teaching ability in the game. Spike had none of that. By all accounts, he knew nothing about Quake 3 (which he played prior to his days in CS) or Counter-Strike. Spike headed up Team 3rd Generation (3g) in Quake 3.

"He was terrible at Quake, but always seemed to play," said Jason 'WildKard' Plant.

Another gamer, Aaron 'Cursive' Stanek, who played Counter-Strike with Spike, echoed that comment. "…[H]e was terrible," said Cursive.

Finley started his search several years ago in the Quake 3 clan Team 3rd Generation, and spent most of his time trying to recruit players that were young rather than ones with any particular Quake 3 skills. When Counter-Strike became more dominant, he attempted to start a clan with Cursive but it never took off as, again, he was only interested in recruiting very young players. He eventually ended up in the Green Berets clan, the group whose members eventually reported him to authorities. All the while he was frequently soliciting members for photographs and was occasionally able to persuade members to meet him in person. Apparently, what kept him in good favor for so long was his ability to present himself as extremely wealthy, with plenty of money to spend on clan servers and other hardware. Many members were under the impression that he was a millionaire. He also created sympathy with stories of a presumably fake lung condition. It's surprising is how long Finley was able to keep up his facade under such bizarre pretenses. The GGL feature has more details.
