Over at GameCloud you can find a Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 preview, offering impressions of the Unreal Engine powered WW2 action game which is due out soon Steam. The former UT2004 mod will also appear in retail stores through publisher Bold Games.

  • It's very slow and sim like, not your traditional first person shooter at all. Some like it and some will really hate the slower pace, especially if you've been playing BF2. The minimal hud really takes some getting used to, you can be walking along and all of the sudden a message pops up saying you're leaving the battlefield with there being no defining boundary or visible clue.

    While you can sprint like in BF2 you run out of gas really fast and it takes longer to get your "breath" back. The iron sights have you looking down the enitre gun and not a blur of a representation, in BF2 you get a slight zoom when you switch to iron sights but not in RO, I think this hurts the game somewhat because we're dealing with 72dpi monitors still and it's damn hard to hit something only a few pixel tall at a distance and tell friend from foe too, but again it's trying to be more of a sim experience.
