I've decided that people who have a thing against particular gaming platforms are silly. It's all about the games folks. I just can't believe how much fun I'm having with all sorts of games from all sorts of platforms - and you folks that won't give consoles a shot, or have a thing against a particular system for some reason are really missing out. =(

I say this while learning to hammer in Guitar Hero and playing Advanced Wars: DS while my fiancee pounds out the rock tunes whenever I take a break.

i bet this gets discussed about every night, but i want to get the shack's opinion before i drop down my hard earned cash-money. I'm finally ready to make the leap from CRT to LCD, and have been looking at Dell's 2405FPW 24-inch monitor. I remember reading that a lot of shackers own a previous model (2001fp ?). So onto my actual questions:

In terms of LCD monitor specs, is this a good one? is 12ms a good pixel response time? what about brightness and viewing angle? make me confident in my decision, or point me towards a better product. thanky.

I'm not trying to shill this, but I'm adding stuff to one of my little projects and was curious if any of you guys wanted to help me test out some of the new features.

I have this goofy side project called www.wishlistbuddy.com that you can use to set up price notifications on items on your Amazon wish list, and I just added support for RSS feeds and support for Amazons other than just .com.

I'm really in search of eyes to take a look at the thing and make sure there aren't any lingering issues -- particularly with the non-dot-com amazons.

I think I've figured out what my biggest issue is with the newer generation of actors and actresses in todays films. Being someone who has worked in film in varying degrees, from acting to writing and production, I can say that there was a much greater verbosity when it comes to the abilities of actors and actresses of the previous generation.

It seems this generation is more concerned with what they are going to wear to the latest awards show, or making sure that they get the right amount of coverage during their sex tape scandal. None of them seem to be actively trying to perfect their craft, or learning everything there is to learn about film for that matter.

Aside from a few exceptions to this ideaology, it is unfortunate that were are now finding what once was considered an artform tailored to near perfection, to now be something you can pop in the microwave for 3 minutes and serve.

I am with Lucas on this. Alot of fans are older and will demand more from a film, as we have much to compare it to, One Flew overs the Cuckoos nest, Memento, Resevoir Dogs and more. So we will see more and more independant films made for $5-15mill bring in the awards and acclaims they rightfully deserve, and we can let the studios serve the blockbuster leftovers to the kid with the Britney Spears ringtone.

I say bring back the well written, well crafted films made by directors, dp's, actors and actresses who understand what it takes and understand the process of making a film.

...and let the rest of them make movies.

I for one am happy that AMD is doing so well and that Intel is losing its stranglehold on the market. Even Dell is being forced to offer options with their processors because AMD has just simply created competitive, quality products.

Are there any real downsides to this greater competition?

The Outfit Writeup:

Ok so about 6 hours later i've finished playing the living crap out of the outfit demo. Thanks to all the shackers that were down with the brown tonight.

As it turns out this game is very strategic, emphasing brains over brawn with a health dose of kick ass at the same time. Scenario time! it was 3 on 3, my team being down by about 60 tickets (Battlefield style). THey had our all of our bases except one and we were hurting. We captured an armor reserve and used all of our resources to each buy tanks...GRIIIIIIIN}r, the tanks spawned next to each other on a hill as we captured one of the main bases.

We then entered our vastly differnt tanks, one was an tank with a huge ass machine gun on the top, the other had a massive cannon, and mine had machineguns and a big ass flame thrower attached to it. We spread out across the map driving our enemy back and tricking them into each other's crossfire until we had them pinned down in their last and only fortification. We rained down aire strikes, artillarly and emplaced machine guns around the camp while we got ready for our assault. We barged in there like a bat out of hell, I personally was listening to jimi hendrix at the time...which you know just FUCKING OWNED. Poor little bagelcc} and mutter futter ran and ran away but I chased their ass down, and litterally stabbed them each in the heart FTW!

Tactics man...this game is all about the tactics. Once you learn how to effectively call in the right weapon for the job, the game enters an entirely new level of fun. I take back my earlier comment about it being a rental and change it to a decisive buy (at a good price...fry's anyone) for the co-op play which i have no doubt will be a blast, and the very fun multiplayer!

Their were so many more cool moments that I can't begin to describe here but suffice to say, the game has a large learning curve but the payoff is worth the effort.

Logitech G15 question.

I had mine G15 for 1-1,5 months and I play WoW alot. That means that I have my fingers on the "WASD" keys almost all the time and I have already started to wear throu the black layer on the keys. I dont play that much FPS-games anymore but I think it would affect that aslo.

It only affects those keys and it start to look really bad and after 3-4 months i think it would look even more ugly.

Anyone else have this problem and do you think Logitech would send me some new sets of "WASD"-keys if i call them and bitch?

(I could take som pictures if you dont know what i mean)

Does anyone remember a game called Fragile Allegiance?
( http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/fragileallegiance/ )

It's a space strategy game where you win over enemies by force or diplomacy.
The best part was building your base(s), arsenal of missiles and then sending the spy satellite to the enemy planet to observe your missile bombardment.

Now is there anything else that is similar to this game but more modern?
I have no idea if there is and I'm hoping to find a game like that. Thanks guys.

I have a growing urge to buy Galactic Civilization II now that I have read some reviews. I was in the mood for some strateregy, and the comments about exceptional AI that doesn't cheat *cough* Civ 4 *cough*, and super-customizable starships sounds awesome. Does any one who has played the game have any thoughts on it? Is the AI really decent?

URGE TO KILL CRITICAL

I downloaded the source to Winroll 2.0 because I wanted to modify it. I have files set to download to my desktop by default and the file was a zip archive. After extracting it, Windows wouldn't let me access the extracted folder--"Access is denied.". I shrug and go to delete it, Windows laughs at me and says no. I log off and back on, still nothing. I reboot, nope. I reboot into safe mode, Windows laughs harder. A Shacker friend links me to http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/; I install, and try to unlock the file. Nothing is locking it. But wait, Unlocker may still be able to help! What do I want to try to do to the file? Delete! Sorry boss, no can do. Would you like me to try on the next boot? Sure. I reboot; it still can't do it. I nuke explorer.exe and try to delete the directories from the command line. Ha ha, nope.

Now, I'm stuck with two (yeah, I tried to extract it again just to make sure it wasn't a one time thing...it wasn't) directories on my desktop and I would be forever grateful to any Shacker who can provide a solution.

SUMMARY: Undeletable directory of invisible cyborg ninja proportions (HALP!), never download the source for Winroll.

So I've finally been playing Psychonauts and I was absolutely in love with it. I'm at what I have to assume is the end, or at least very near it (Climbing up the "Meat Circus" while your dad is throwing crap at you).

OMFG, this is one of the most frusterating things I have ever experienced. The movement mechanics just are not at all conduscve to what you are supposed to do. I'm talking to you, buring spiral net with gaps in it

So, do any of you have any experience reading and extracting data from PDF files?

I need to code a quick program that will basically take a bunch of PDF files, parse their data, and spit them out to a spreadsheet or something.

It might not be so quick, but I at least need to get the parsing done.

I have new 250gb HDD, and I want to dual boot XP and Vista. Do I need to partition it with a third party program? I'm currently running Vista on a 20GB HDD. What would let me clone it onto the 250GB (and partition it)?

Dual VGA gurus- I am trying two monitors for the first time now. Is it possible to scroll out of a game like BF2 over to my second monitor to make a teamspeak adjustment/post in chatty without the game minimizing itself? It kind of defeats purpose of two monitors it seems.
