F.E.A.R. Sequels Coming

33

GameSpot reports that Monolith is getting ready to create sequels to last year's horror action game F.E.A.R., with plans for PC and console titles. The new games will not bear the F.E.A.R. name however, as those rights are owned by Vivendi Universal Games. Monolith does still own the characters, and plans to continue the storyline from the first title.

Monolith is tailoring the sequels' content between the PC and console iterations. The practice of releasing IP on PCs first, then giving console versions a console-specific overhaul is becoming more and more common, as evidenced by Infinity Ward's Call of Duty franchise and Ubisoft's Far Cry franchise. Developers can use each platform's strengths and control schemes to deliver different experiences. Samantha Ryan, president of Monolith Productions, told GameSpot, "We believe that the PC audience is entirely viable and can support a game just as it did support F.E.A.R. To deliver the best quality title, the PC needs to be a focus. We believe that next-gen will also be awesome, but again, it has some differences and this is the approach that we're going to try."

Awesome! Glad to hear that Monolith firmly believes in the "PC first, port to consoles later" methodology. It works so much better for everyone in the long run. Afterall, it's easier to design good GUI's for PC users with mouses and then dumb them down later for consoles, than it is to take dumbed down GUI's and port them straight to the PC.

    wooT!

Agreed. PC->Console is always better than codevelopment or Console->PC.

I agree 100% There were many different console/pc games that came out at the same time and it did neather of them justice. I'm looking at you Deus Ex 2 :(

Doesn't seem to be what they did with Condemned though.

Have you actually done the programming to create those GUI's?
To me, you have it all backwards. PC's have a HUGE range of systems you have to aim for. Consoles (especially next gen) is just one, bam, that's it.

the problem is that many publishers would just take their lower-res textures from the XBox game that has a 64 MB system RAM ceiling and use it in the PC game. Or at least that's what it seemed like for a number of the console-to-PC ports. Invisible War was one of the notorious CONSOLE'D games.

I was coming in to post something very similar. It was nice to read that "Since people bought our game, we will keep making games for those people."

I loved every single second of FEAR and look forward to future endeavours.
