Battlefield 2142 in the Works?

Update: Not too surprisingly, the official EA comment on this rumor is "no comment." However, that is at least a slightly more suggestive answer than "EA does not comment on rumors." In the comments section of today's Battlefield 2: Modern Combat interview here on Shack, readers seem to have figured out what exactly producer Dan Blackstone was talking about when he hinted at the future of the Battlefield franchise with the following answer: "3213/3X2. Or said another way: S.R. 4588164." In hindsight it seems obvious; the first set of numbers comprise mathematical operations equalling 2142. The second phrase indicates the square root of 4588164, which is 2142. Thanks to themelon and kainen1 for figuring out both parts first. So, Battlefield 2142 it is, then? It looks like DICE's popular online shooter franchise may very well be taking the next logical step, and moving into the future. EA has been contacted for comment, and any response will be added here.

what pisses me off is MS has had control of the Battletech liscense for interactive games for over 5 years now and they could'nt do something like this? The BT universe is a perfect fit for a persistant or casual online play. The source material has many classes of ground troops, armor, weapons, tanks, mechs etc. yet its been going stagnant under MS control.

I liked BF2, I really did. It has its insane bugs, performance is crap, the interface is shit, balance has its issues, but from some gameplay sides, they did a lot of cool, semi-innovative things to bring the experience forward.

Still, I can't take it anymore. The BF2 release cycle has let me severely burned; hearding about expansion packs and booster packs and whatnots when my game won't even run just made me pissed. Thanks EA, but I'll pass on this one.

hmm. I dunno what to think of such a thing. From BF2 I don't get the feeling Dice isn't great at making things up - the weird factions and "war" scenarios in it just don't feel right to me. I think a futuristic game would suffer the same lack of depth...

BF1942 is always going to seem better I bet because it has so much source material

I loved bf1942..one of my all time favorite mp games. BF vietnam bugs and a lack of patches that fixed anything legitimate for AGES just dicked me over, i haven't bought bf2 and I don't plan on buying it or any future release until they get their crap in gear, they have more than enough money to do better QA on their releases.

I say they make BF: 1776. There would be one gun, one vehicle (horse), and two sides. All the levels would be open fields.
