Romero Responds

John Romero being the good sport that he is took some time to respond to the criticism he went under for releasing a screenshot of his desktop of all things. It's pretty amazing how much time some people spent analyzing the thing. Oh btw, the IonStorm firewall prevents access to this page from their office, (I'm told due to the comments system, they dont want Ion employees posting stuff) so you won't really see any responses here. Here's what John had to say:

...I will accept the fact that all popular messageboards are negative. All of them. It's the reason they exist. But the fact that there's just so many highly negative posts about a game that i'm working on just boggles me. I'm just a game developer, like the thousands that are out there, working hard on making a game for you people. Sure, i'm also making it for myself to play and to support myself and my company, but i wouldn't be able to do that if it weren't for everyone out there in the world, thinking that the games that i make are fun. I'm just trying to make a fun game and it's been a pretty rough road with this one, but we're finally at the end. The next one will be an easier development cycle and i'll definitely be toning-down the PR machine on its development. I won't be giving out release dates next time.

  • John is a nice guy. If you have ever talked to him you would know. Judge Daikatana when it\'s gold and you\'ve played it. Just think that all this time he is putting more cool shit into the game. Making it more fun to play. And if you still play QuakeWorld don\'t talk about Daikatana being dated tech and no good because of that. QuakeWorld is still super fun to play. Relax people. Have a heart and try and put yourself in his shoes. He is just a guy trying to make a game the best he can.
This idea that everyone that does not work at id anymore after Quake sucks is stupid. IMHO all the good ones left and the only crap remains. EXCEPT John Carmack and Paul Steed. The rest are just living of what id used to be when the team was there during DOOM and Quake years.

  • VE is a fucken much better site than this one... sure there arn\'t as many comments to read... which is why I read the shack, but when people on VE comment it\'s generally of a much more open minded and intelligent nature. Most of the people who post here are lame 12 year olds with no life... I don\'t even know WHY I\'m posting this...

I guess I feel I have to defend VE as I think it\'s pretty much the best damn Gaming News site on the web.

Leave Romero alone, most of you are so young you don\'t even know what it felt like to open up Doom when it was brand spanking new... nothing, I repeat nothing, has ever come close to that. (Maybe looking at GLQuake with my Voodoo1 was close... that blew me away when it was new technology). Anyway, Romero makes a couple of damn fine early games and takes too long with his third game. So fucking WHAT??? He\'ll hopefully get his ass into gear with the next game you\'ll all go \'ooh\', \'ahhh\', pretty graphics, etc... Man, so many good comments on here about SoF and no good one\'s about DK.... bunch of wankers...

  • I have to agree with Romero, most gaming messageboards are probably the most frustrating, depressing things I\'ve run across. People just can\'t be happy with anything.

Another thing, when Daikatana is released, and if it\'s fun- I will buy it. People who have already made their decision on this game without playing are just as bad as the people they call \'fanboys\'. Hell, most of them don\'t matter anyways because they never really buy games to begin with. They just crack them or get an iso off the net. Pathetic. If the game is not fun, I will return it. It\'s that simple. It\'s pretty shallow to not like something based on how long it\'s been delayed (Blizzard anyone?).
