by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 11, 2006 5:32am PSTIt hasn't been even 24 hours yet but my new phone has already proven its worth. I was on the road grabbing some food when Steve called saying the the FileShack DFW server was acting up. So I went online with IE, went to our admin interface and took it out of rotation. I very much approve! Also on FileShack
- GAU's BF2 MapPack v1 - a few custom maps for Battlefield 2.
Daily Filter: Planetside 2, Deadlight
Weekend PC digital deals: strategy-o-rama

Minecraft for Xbox 360 dev working on 'Adventure' update
Demon's Souls servers extended again
So my Dad has just gotten this iboss filter for our network which he wants to use for my siblings pcs, but he wants me to figure out how to make it so myself and my brother in law's PC are not under the filter.
The filter needs to be hooked up through the WAN on our router in order to work, and since our cable is dynamic I can't just hub off my pc and my Bro in law's pc. What I'm thinking could be done is have 2 routers. First router takes the cable modem, with my pc, bro-in-laws, and the filter on the ports. Then the filter goes into ANOTHER router which then hooks up to a large hub to route to all the rest of the pcs in the house.
Does this sound like it will work?

I like how the game plays, with cross examinations and evidence and such. The characters are funny, but it's extremely annoying to have to deal with such lame logic, in particular the whole idea that I'm the only one that has to prove anything and that the prosecutor can just level charges at any time. Specifically (2nd trial spoiler) when I'm on trial for murder, the "witness" changed his story like 5 times while at the same time, if I can't disprove all of his lies, I get sent to prison based upon his testimony! You'd think that after I caught him in one or even two lies that the case would be over. And that fucking edgeworth drives me nuts I know that the game is not meant to be taken seriously, but I wish the whole trial business was at least a bit more logical and rewarded sharp thinking more.

ATTN: Anyone who is interested in a realistic wargaming experience. Also, all you Operation Flashpoint people.
Three new screens for Armed Assault, the semi-sequel to Operation Flashpoint, have been released.
The first one is of a UH-60.
http://ofp.gamepark.cz/news/pics3/armans1.jpg
Second one is a BMP-2 cruising through a town.
http://ofp.gamepark.cz/news/pics3/armans2.jpg
The last one is another UH-60, possibly the DAP variant, firing some FFAR's into the town we saw in the last batch of screens.
http://ofp.gamepark.cz/news/pics3/armans3.jpg
For those of you that missed them, the previous two screens that were released:

http://ofp.gamepark.cz/news/pics3/aa_shot52.jpg
For those of you that still don't understand what all the hoopla about OFP/ArmA is about, here's a repost of what I wrote about my experiences with OFP for the past few years:
The best way I can think to explain Operation Flashpoint to you is to tell you a sampling of the things I've done in it over the years since it was originally released.
I've fought over every type of terrain you can find on our planet, from swampy marshes to vast deserts, frozen tundras, dense forests.. I've fought from the hills, on mountains, I've staged ambushes in valleys and dissapeared into jungles. From dusk to dawn and back again, in rain, snow, thunderstorms, fog.. I've gone out on solo missions, or as part of an elite 4-man SEAL team, oftentimes I've been commanding an entire squad of soldiers (12), and I've even been a Company Commander tasked with capturing a entire many-square-kilometer islands town-by-town with armor, air support, infantry, special forces, artillery... with all of it under my direction. I've fought in the past (WWII, Vietnam, the Gulf War), in the present (Iraq/Afghanistan), and the future. I've fought as an American, as a Russian, a Finn, even an Afghan rebel, and I've wielded unique, accurately-modelled weapons on every side. It's not just humans, either... I've killed dinosaurs, zombies, and even had a shot at Godzilla once upon a time. I've used real ballistics, real lead/compensation, to score a body shot on an enemy soldier running perpendicular to me 500 yards away - and I've felt the satisfaction that only a game like this could give you for making such a difficult shot on the first try. I've fought as a common grunt, as a special forces soldier, as a tank commander or gunner or driver, an APC crewman, an anti-tank gunner, a transport helo pilot or crew chief/door gunner, an attack helo pilot, a jet fighter/bomber pilot... I've jumped out of planes, I've fast-roped out of helicopters, I've even done HALO drops - High Altitude, Low Opening. I've watched the tide go out as the sun dips below the horizon while in a defensive position, I've stared at real starfields in a dark night sky as brilliant tracers flick up kilometers away as they chase after an A-10 doing an attack run...
...and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Flashpoint is nothing like those "other" games you might be thinking of. Give it the respect the dev team has so rightly earned. OFP has never been challenged for the throne it so securely holds. Never.
Shack Tactical Info
In related news, we have a Shack gaming group set up for Operation Flashpoint, Armed Assault, and Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45. There are 47 Shackers currently in it, and we coordinate with the Something Awful Goon OFP group pretty frequently. If you are interested in joining, simply go here and read up on it: http://www.dslyecxi.com/shacktac.html
Armed Assault should be released in March. Operation Flashpoint: Game of the Year Edition is available now for as little as $10 in some places. There is no better gaming value in existence.

The only thing I have managed to do since I found out is zone the fuck out and make music. The kind of music he inspired. This track is dedicated it to James Yancey aka J Dilla.

Downloads with Firefox are the suck. Let's say I want to download a file: I right-click on the link, select Save As, but it takes a good 10-15 seconds before the download starts. Even worse, let's say I want to also download a second file: that one will take a solid 30-45 seconds before it begins. And during these delays, Firefox is completely non-responsive.
Okay, so how 'bout I disable the Firefox download manage? Uh uh, it's not much better: instead of a window popping up with the download, it... well, actually, I can't remember what happens, but it ain't any better.
What I want is downloads like IE: right-click on a file, and nearly instantly a download window appears. And if I want to download a second file, it starts just as fast.
How can I get this same functionality in FF?
tl;dr How do I speed up the beginning of downloads in FF?

Twenty-one players - more than one fifth of the squad - completed the 2005 fall semester with grade-point averages of 3.60 or higher and were named either to the All-A Honors list (4.0 GPA) or to the Dean's List (3.60-3.99 GPA). Fifty-nine - more than half the team - carry cumulative grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher. Twenty-six were named to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association academic honor roll.
That's not too bad.

TABBED COMMAND TOOLS!! (with incredible preferences, session restore, and command prompt history) ... $30!! I'm going to test it for the next week, and if it doesn't crash on me at all, then they win my money for SURE.. BF1942 SHACKBATTLE Announcement for Sunday, February 12, 2006, 9:00 P.M. E.S.T.!!!!!
We'll be playing BF1942 v1.61 at bf1942.shackbattles.com:14567 - password is in themelon's profile.
We'll also be using Teamspeak. EVERYONE should be on Teamspeak, at least to listen even if you don't have a mic. We'll be connecting to rydogg1's server: ts.shackbattles.com - no password required.
If you're new to the game and need training or help, I (and several others) will be happy to spend all the time you need walking you through the different classes, weapons, tactics, etc. Just let us know!
The map rotation will also include Shackmaps and the tournament map pack. You can get them at the links below. I'm trying to fix the Aachen map; the crash is related to the munitions panzer, but I'm not sure exactly why.

The US government mandates that everybody be offered one free credit report each year. Your credit report is a list of the following information:
- Credit-lending accounts that you have opened and the status of each account in every month of its life.
- Queries of your credit report that reduce your score.
- Regular queries of your report that don't reduce your score.
- Names and aliases, as well as past addresses, on file that help identify you.
The "big 3" credit agencies (Equifax, TransUnion, Experian) have set up a web portal to facilitate getting this report. It is NOT freecreditreport.com. Those jackasses are just trying to subscribe you to a useless $13/mo service. The correct site to request your credit report is:
http://www.annualcreditreport.com
It will take you to the pages of each of the big 3's sites to let you request a report from them. The whole shebang takes about 20 minutes, but you get the report within a couple weeks.
NOTE You won't get a credit score with this request, only a report. Your credit score is for sale, whereas the report that they use to calculate the score is free. If you want a score, you can buy it, and most state governments require that the price be under $10.

Comparing these two:

The Dell is ~$50 cheaper (after rebate on the Konica). Drivers for the Dell are 9 MB, while the Konicas drivers are 5 MB, so no bloated HP drivers. The Dell looks to be a little faster, but that's not a big deal. Warranty on the Dell is better, and it's from Costco, so that's good.
Hmm, I think it's the Costco return policy that's pushing me towards the Dell more. Dell makes their own stuff, right? Or is it made by someone else and rebranded?

Was definetly awesome. Sabres v Hurricanes. They were cheap, $15 seats, the very last row at the top corner, and I still had a blast.
Game was close the entire way, tied up at 3-3, no score in the overtime, and it went to a shootout, tied 2-2, and the hurricanes had the last shot, and made it to win the game.
More enjoyable was sitting beside a sabres fan and cheering when he booed, and booing when he cheered.

I had forgotten that I always liked DoD better than CS. I like the quick respawns, setting, and weapons. And HDR looks wonderful when done right.
That said, the sound is kind of funky and has nearly "locked up" on me during a few heavy firefights. Also the snow map performs pretty poorly during lots of action, though it's far from unplayable.
Definitely worth $20 IMO and it brought back a lot of memories. I love rifles.

Basically pass a cop going ~150+ mph faster than his rate of speed. (~50, ~100, and ~150 are each of the triggers for Speeding, Excessive Speeding, and Reckless Driving, from what I can tell.)
Sorry 'bout the low quality... it was a 200MB AVI from FRAPS and I used Windows Movie Maker to crank it down to a 6MB WMV that can fit on my limited hosting space.
Enjoy. =)

The video is of some footage that I took yesterday on a nature hike. It took about 4 hours to capture 15 minutes of footage, which yielded 1:15 of final video. I also took some cool shots of a quarry and stuff, but they didn't fit in here, so maybe you'll see them later.

I recently made a web page for an attorney so I found a hosting company and signed up for a domain name and web space through them. Problem is, she just recently realized she doesn't want the name she chose for the page and wants to change it. I don't have a clue how this stuff works, is there an easy way I can register a new domain name and have the new domain name point to the page or something, or do I have to give the hosting company a call, or what? I'm kind of an idiot :(
