They're Out There... Posting
by Chris Remo, Feb 02, 2006 11:00am PSTA post made by Jerry "Tycho" Holkins on Penny Arcade a few days ago contained an email from someone entitled called "Mr Smith," who had declined an offer with a "guerrilla marketing business." Had he accepted, his job would have been to create dozens or hundreds of accounts on forums across the internet for the purpose of sowing positive press about whatever product the company happens to be marketing--which could include, of course, video games. I'm sure many of us have seen that kind of behavior on forums before, those painfully obvious guys who appear out of nowhere with an account created yesterday, saying something like "Hey, guys, as you know I love video games, and I bet you do too! Well, Blood Dude Destroyer IV is the hot game around these days! It has all the best features and graphics! Anyway, see ya!" While this behavior is usually frowned upon by forum administrators, it tends to be somewhat less than convincing. However, Tycho followed up yesterday with more information from somebody who seems to have a lot more in-depth knowledge of how some of these guerrilla marketers actually work. The methods he describes are far more complex than the simple "extremegamer953" technique.
Their technique is quite insidious. Let's say they were hired to pump up PA (not like you need the buzz, but whatever...). Using one of the hundreds of shill accounts they have across the net, they post a new thread that says something like "hey guys, I've been looking for some new web comics to read. Anybody have any recommendations?" This is non-threatening, and gets the community engaged. They then wait a couple days and post again, this time with "Well, I asked some friends and they suggested I check out Penny ArcadeGiven the level of long-term planning and maintenance in use there, one wonders whether the more straightforward shills are deliberately planted simply to alleviate suspicion from the more effective ones, by adjusting readers' expectations of how such marketing works. The case quoted above describes forum behavior that in general is perfectly benign. It would be interesting to know how many of these firms exist, and how frequently their services are employed. It seems that they are by no means limited to gaming.. I thought it was pretty funny, although I didn't like all the cuss words. What do you guys think?" Again, seeking engagement, they now have stealthily inserted the client's link, thereby encouraging trial. It's all very measurable and very effective. You should see the monthly reports you get from these guys: everything is detailed.

In the end whatever company(not the websites) hired us to do the marketing wanted screen shots of the interaction and links to the site and binder filled with everything we did. Along with the marketing tactics ALL websites where in on it and we place contest promotions in conjunction of us promoting it on the forum...Like giving away a package deal. When I worked for the company about %90 of the sites aggreed to work with us. We where not trying to be sly and undermind the website we where working with. And it helped that we gave the some pretty nice stuff as well to let us "host" or campagin on their site. There is a lot more to the process but that is the gist of what we did.
There are some super shady marketing companies that don't do very well and blow theire cover (like this http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=9539658).
Sure it could be considered bad form. But it happens everywhere and not just on the net. I recently did a job working for a liqour company being a "high roller" and I got paid to be drive around in a limo with 8 girls going to clubs and getting VIP treatment and buying everybody 200 dollar bottles of champagne! Marketing is fun work, when it is on the DL!

You're just giving people the idea to check something out. It's not like you're taking the money directly out of their wallets.. The people reading your posts still make their own decisions.
I don't think paying people to put the word out there is underhanded.. It's just more advertising..

This reminds me of an article a few months back somewhere on the interwebs, except it was alot more insidious.
Apparently the Chinese government employs over a thousand people who's task is to surf chinese websites and forums all day solely for the purpose of posting comments that are supportive of the government's policies on the topic being discussed. The purpose of this is to sublty bend and twist public opinion. The product being sold is oppression and the sale is made pending compliance or lack of resistance. "Status Quo."
Although the existence of an internet police force - estimated at more than 30,000 - has been known for some time, attention has previously focused on their work as censors and monitors. Countless critical comments appear on bulletin boards of major portals such as Sohu and Sina only to be erased minutes, or sometimes just seconds, later. In the most recent case, all postings that blamed corrupt local officials or slow-moving police for the deaths of 88 children in floods last Friday were removed almost as soon as they appeared.

Who here is a viral marketer?!
Trust no one.
Soon every post on the Shack is going to be followed by a deluge of, "OMG marketting shill!" accusations. This is going to be worse than the Salem witch trials. I predict that the Shack community will tear itself apart in a matter of days over this.

I'm more concerned about payola reviews in magazines and on web sites like IGN or GameSpot. The movie equivelant would be like if a studio gave Roger Ebert money for a good movie review. That would hurt his credibility. Someone posting crap in a Shack chatty thread or whatever, there is no credibility!
If the words of people you don't know on message boards is so (to use a made up Colbert word) trustigious to people who are buying console & PC games, then it indicates that this country/world has a bigger problem than the advertising.
Besides, I think Shackhype from genuine posters is reponsible for enough lousy game purchases that we know not to trust the phenomenon anymore.
"By the way, if anyone here is in advertising or marketing, kill yourself. No, this is not a joke: kill yourself . . . I know what the marketing people are thinking now too: 'Oh. He's going for that anti-marketing dollar. That's a good market.' Oh man, I am not doing that, you fucking evil scumbags."
