I live about 35 to 45 minutes west of Detroit, I live in Ann Arbor. My cousin lives in Detroit because he is a Police Officer in the 9th precinct.
Detroit is the poorest city big city in America. My cousin worries about his job every day because he knows the Mayor plans to lay off more Detroit Police officers when the Super Bowl is over. THis will make crime go up even more, less police, more crime. Then you wonder why all the "911 is a joke" comments come out. Pretty soon police officers will only respond to murders and will not give priority to any theft, unless a bank gets knocked. off.
I was born in Detroit and raised there until I was 14 years old before my dad moved me out of the city. (Thank God!) The popluation in Detroit keeps declining and the city is losing out on tax money as more people move out. They have problems that they don't know how to address. I know there are suburbs of Detroit that is trying to buy land cheep to extend thier territory towards Detroit. So I guess Detroit is getting smaller. The only time I go to Detroit is to watch a Lions Football, Tiger Baseball or Detroit Red Wings Hockey. And that's it!
The mayor here is so corrupt, for those of you in other parts of the country that is not aware of our Detroit Mayor. Detroit Mayor Kwami Kilpatrick was accused 2 years ago of throwing a party at the Mayors Mansion with lots of strippers. His wife came home and freaked out when she saw the mayor getting a lap dance. His wife freaked out and called the police to break it up.
Things were out of control and some people were hurt and rushed to the Hospital. But this was kept secret until some people that worked for the hospital spoke out on local tv stations.
Then the mayor was being ivestigated by the Chief of Police. The next day the Chief of Police was reassigned to Lansing MI. Then 4 weeks later, the stripper that was giving the Mayor a lap dance was murdered in her car by rapid gun fire. No one knows who did it and it's not being investigated.
This is stil being covered up and stil being blocked out from investigation. There is a lot of corruption in Detroit and it does not help much having Casino's here either. Detroit has so much potential of being a beautiful city being off the lake for new development. But GM and other large companies will not give up the lake front property even though it looks like crap.

I just got married, no kids yet. I'd miss my family here, but it's probably the chance of a lifetime...or maybe it's not.
Any good suggestions on how I figure out if this is a good move for me?
I've got a pretty cushy job right now, working from home most of the time, paid pretty well. I'm sure this MS thing would be much more challenging and rewarding, but...then another way of saying that is I'll just have to work harder and enjoy life less. No body on their deathbed ever said they wish they'd spent more time at the office!

The difference between theoretical performance and real-world performance on the CPU level is growing fast. On, say, a regular Xbox, you can get very large fractions of theoretical performance with not a whole lot of effort. The PlayStation 2 was always a mess with the multiple processors on there, but the new generations, with Cell or the Xbox 360, make it much, much worse. They can quote these incredibly high numbers of giga-flops or tera-flops or whatever, but in reality, when you do a straightforward development process on them, they’re significantly slower than a modern high-end PC."

Oh yeah, Dual core 275 opty's, dual processor mobo, 3-PCI-x slots, 1 PCI slot (already occupied), 4 gb ram, Quadro 3400 vid card.
Going to the gym here at work, showering, then getting dressed...only to realize you've forgotten your belt, and dress shoes. Then having a meeting with a VP first thing that morning and having to explain why you're dressed like a girls soccer coach.
Walking someone through peforming XYZ task on their computer and watching them double-click everything; links on webpages, icons on the quicklaunch bar, OK and Cancel buttons, ect.
