At that resolution, on a traditional SLI rig, the bottleneck shifts back to the GPUs. The other huge benefit that you get is the ability to crank AA, aniso, and (they said) soft shadows up to the maximum limit and still run at 60 fps.
The other thing is that the new XPS runs the new 65 nm Presler CPU, which is dual-core. And, Dell overclocked it from stock to 4.246GHz or thereabouts, which should make it competitive with AMD's next-gen offerings.
I'm going to have to do some real-world testing before I'm convinced that it's worth what this machine is obviously going to cost; however, it could be pretty amazing, especially when paired with the right display. Those 30-inch displays are breathtaking.
If you're running at 1024x768, you should just stick with a Radeon 9700. There's no reason for you to spend money on new hardware.

I'd known Dell had gotten bad about that sort of thing, but the recent [H] article really was surprising.

By the time a game comes out that will really benefit from that much power it will be available much cheaper and in a single card that produces less noise and heat and uses fewer slots and less power. And crashes in fewer games.
