Microsoft Releases WMF Exploit Fix

A few days earlier than expected Microsoft has finally released a patch for the WMF exploit thats's been making the rounds. Patches for the "critical" flaw are available for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows XP Service Pack 1 & 2, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, and various flavors of Windows 2003.

actually the simgvw.dll wasn' the best way.. the best way was downloading Ilfak Guilfanov's patch, which according to grc.com does the exact same thing as MS's patch: "It simply revokes support for the age-old WMF 'SETABORT' command from metafile processing."

It also requires a reboot.

If you unregistered the service to protect yourself, once the system has rebooted, run regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll to re-enable the thumbnails in folders and windows picture and fax viewer.

  I've been trying to completely disable show images in folders for ages now, so I am quite glad the patch ... : mrflamey
