I Hear the Secrets That You Keep
by Chris Remo, Dec 13, 2005 10:15am PSTOver at 1UP there's a feature called Locked and Loaded in which author Jon Dudlak takes a look at some easter eggs, secrets, and developer areas to be found in nine different classic games. I won't spoil any particulars here, just in case, but it includes Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1), Perfect Dark (N64), Final Fantasy VII (PS1), Metroid Prime (GCN), The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES), and four Super Mario games.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' hidden "Hot Coffee" humping minigame got us wondering what other not-intended-for-playtime extras are buried deep within our games. A little snooping didn't turn up any more gratuitous sex scenes, unfortunately, but we'll settle for secret levels, developer-testing rooms, and hidden audio tracks. We'll leave the Princess Peach-on-Solid Snake sex minigames to your own fan fiction.Feel free to share any of your favorite hidden gaming gems, but don't forget to use spoiler tags!

when you get away from them and get to the helicopter nothing fucking happens at all. i was hoping for shit to blow up and maybe some sort of different story arc but nothing happens at all. it took me about fifty fucking times to manage to finally get out of there just for a helicopter that you cant even fly around the place under your control or even a cyborg dog army or naked pictures of your mum or sister. you know what im talking about.

And Doom2 had those Wolfenstein levels in it.

I think there was like a spaceship of some sort, and I think there was Max in there at some point, but I can't remember now...
Now that I think of it, I wasn't even looking for an easter egg, I was just bored. :)

I can recall looking into a hole of a rock in King's Quest II and you got to see a trailer for Space Quest I.
Then King's Quest III if you looked behind a tapestry you would see a KQIV promo.
My favourite one of all was King's Quest IV where at a certain point near the end of the game if you typed beam me up or something like that you would go to a secret room with all of the game programmers who would talk to you.
Actually you could probably do this endlessly with the sierra games, all of the sierra games were very self-referential. I remember that wandering through the QG2 desert you would bump into King Arthur from Conquest of Camelot, etc. etc. etc. These are things that you can't do quite as blatantly anymore since the industry has matured and become more sophisticated. It is a lot of fun but a little unprofessional too. Swiss cheese and books in the corner of rooms is one thing, programming yourself as a talking character into a room is another.
