Late Night Consoling
by Chris Remo, Dec 06, 2005 8:00pm PSTThis Revolution news is turning out to be a surprise. I've gotta say, though, if they can really launch that thing for the price that's being quoted (you'll have to keep reading to find out what I'm talking about here!) I think it'll be tough to pass up for a lot of gamers. I really think this upcoming generation is going to be pretty fascinating. All three manufactures now have at leaset a few years in the game, and they each seem to have their own approach much more clearly defined than in the last generation (even if it's not all clear to us yet).
- Matt Casamassina over at IGN has some unconfirmed but seemingly well-sourced news about Nintendo's upcoming Revolution console, elaborating on the details he posted yesterday with the launch of the site's Revolution channel. Nintendo has made it pretty clear up to this point that the system will end up with relatively low specs compared to Sony and Microsoft's machines, as well as a lower price point. If this new information is to be believed, both will be even lower than most have suspected. One source said, "Our guys experimented with it and think they'll be able to get about twice the performance as GameCube," noting that the CPU will probably be a little less than twice as powerful as the GameCube's. At this point it doesn't seem like any of IGN's sources have had hands on time with the ATI-designed GPU, though it is said to have a similar structure to the GameCube's. It seems likely that the machine has a similar programming environment (and by extension somewhat similar hardware) because Nintendo has been stating that one way they plan to keep costs low for developers is by having a familiar back end . Another revelation of note was that all the developers questioned believe the system will launch at a price tag of around $149, with the possibility of $99. The latter figure seems just a tad unrealistic considering that's the GameCube's current discounted price and it wouldn't give Nintendo much room for price cuts later, but a $149 launch price point could easily justify the system's low horsepower compared to Xbox 360 and PS3, positioning the system as an easy sell to gamers who want an extra machine for less traditional gameplay. IGN points out that Nintendo has absolutely no desire to compete with the its fellow next-gen consoles, which has been a recurring theme on the part of outspoken Nintendo marketing VP Reggie Fils-Aime. Speaking of gameplay, all sources indicated that's where the strength of the Revolution lie. "It's a gamble for the Big N," one said. "It's not about horsepower for them -- it's about innovation and gameplay." Considering the hype Microsoft has built around its HD Era marketing line, it's certainly a gamble, although there is that wacky controller. Nintendo design head Shigeru Miyamoto also recently hinted at additional unrevealed functionality with the machine, but it's anyone's guess as to what that is. At this point it looks like it's going to be all about the games, so roll on E3.
Revolution Details: Low Specs, Low Price
[nintendo] - Though conclusive sales figures have not yet been released, it's looking like the Xbox 360 has become the fastest selling home console in the UK, beating out the GameCube, which set the prior record in May 2003. However, did not manage to capture the record for all consoles--both portable and home--as the PSP still holds the overall record in the UK with 185,000 units in its first week. In Europe overall, it seems the Cube will hold on to its title, as that machine sold out its 400,000 unit launch quantity, and the Xbox 360 only has 300,000 units total to go around. However, Microsoft has been repeatedly pledging to restock quantities worldwide, and hopefully the company will be able to compensate for the limited supply.

[xbox360] - In an interview about his new King Kong remake, director Peter Jackson spoke very briefly about the upcoming Halo adaptation, on which he is serving as executive producer. It seems that he may have been considering taking the director's chair himself, but decided he wanted a break. When confronted with the rather meritous claim that "video game movies suck," Jackson acknowledged that "They do" and followed up with "Hopefully it won't suck." Last week it was rumored that Hellboy/Blade II director Guillermo del Toro has been approached by Jackson to direct the project, but Jackson did not comment on any specific names, only indicating that the team is "talking to some people."

[xbox] - Ubisoft's Montreal studio is apparently working on no less than four next-gen projects, though no details have been released on any of them. 1UP points out that despite Splinter Cell 4 shipping to Xbox 360 as well as current-gen consoles, it is not one of the four projects. Ubisoft frequently outsources even-numbered games in its various series to its Shangai studio, and the next Splinter Cell is no exception. Unsurprisingly, Ubisoft Montreal will be ramping up its staff count to compensate for the additional development requirements of next-gen systems. There were recent rumors that one of the projects is a first person shooter for Revolution, but Ubisoft has still yet to confirm or deny that speculation.

[ps3] [xbox360] [nintendo] - Electronic Arts has announced its plans to open a new development studio in Singapore made up of 20 developers from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and, rather bizarrely, Holland (hi, Maarten!). The studio will mainly focus on localization as well as online games.

I have gone on about this before in other threads, but it is surely quite obvious that a hastily slapped together high resolution art will look worse than lovingly crafted low resolution art. For god's sake, look at WoW, only one of the most popular games in the world right now. The graphiccs aren't technically incredible, but Blizzard have done a wonderful job with the assets, so the game is quite gorgeous.
Presumably if you are producing a high budget title for the Rev, you're extra money and time are going to be spent on better things than creating bump maps, high resolution textures, and modelling the creases on a characters pants. I also think that because Xbox 360 and PS3 titles will have higher level of complexity, they will be more difficult to manage, and more prone to go horribly wrong if not managed very well.

By having a system that has such a dramatic difference in power than the other two, it ensures that almost everything that comes out on the Revolution will be an exclusive title. Developers will have a limited ability to release something like Soul Calibur II on all 3 systems anymore. That may seem detrimental, but I think it's a feater in Nintendo's cap. I have all 3 systems and if something comes out on all 3, I almost always get the Xbox version, so unless Nintendo had the most powerful system of the next gen, being a nearly equal cometitor wouldn't do them any good.
And since most titles that hit the Revolution will be platform exclusives, it's a sure bet they'll take advantage of the controller. You won't have some hacked control scheme from a game that was designed to be played with 2 analog sticks.
So here's my prediction. There will be households like mine that will eventually have all 3 systems, but that won't be the most common setup. The most common household will probably be a single console, and in those situations, I don't think the Revolutions numbers will be super impressive, but, in a household that has 2 next gen consoles, I predict that the most common setup will be either a 360 or a PS3, AND an Revolution. You know that everything that comes out for the 360 will also come out for the PS3, with a handful of exceptions for exclusive titles. At least in America. In Japan the PS3 is still going to win the numbers war hands down and the PS3 will have tons more exclusives over there. But any American made title released in the states will be released on both the 360 and PS3. So owning both won't make as much sense as owning one or the other + a Revolution, especially if they can enter the market at half the pricepoint of the other 2. And shooting for such a different market with a 'wussy' machine, MS and Sony isn't likely to regard them as a huge threat, so I'd be really suprised to see reactionary pricecuts on the 360 or PS3 the day the Revolution launches.

I consider myself a serious gamer, I live in Europe (france), and I know exactly 0 people with a HD setup..
As far as Im concerned EVN if I had a HD setup I could seriously care less about that. MS and Sony could put that HD hype up where the sun doesn't shine and lower the retail price by 100$ and that'd be fine with me.

You go and you buy your 360 or your PS3 or whatever, you spend a few hundred bucks on that, and then maybe you feel like something totally different. Okay, no big deal, you go out and spend $150, the price of a few games, on a Revolution and you're guaranteed some interesting stuff. It's a given that the price point will drop over time as well. It's a no-commitment console.
Nintendo just wants to get the damn thing into people's hands; once they do that, they can say "Hey look, here's the original Super Mario, it's a few bucks and you can play it." Maybe that doesn't matter to people like us who have played those games a million times, but it sure as hell matters to Mother McHousewife, believe it. I was at GameSpot's G.A.M.E. event this weekend and they had a booklet with random questions posed to people on the street and in the event. ALL of the females, from young girls to adult women, mentioned Super Mario. It was ridiculous. One gamer's girlfriend said "I wish you could get Super Mario on PlayStation," a 15-year-old girl said "Why don't they have games like Super Mario? I like simple games like that." It went on and on.
360 is doing a similar thing but the entry price is WAY higher. I can easily way more impulse buys of something like Revolution for $150 with the promise of an intuitive controller and accessible classic games. If that works and it increases Rev sales, developers will start taking more risks on the system pushing more interesting games. We already know Nintendo is committed to the FPS genre, they've reiterated that many times, and if they do a good job with their free online service some cool stuff could result. I can't wait to see what Retro brings to the table with Metroid.
Anyway, I'm actually excited about this thing the more I think about it. I was looking forward to it before, but now I think I'm really starting to understand the strategy Nintendo plans to pursue, and yeah it's still a gamble, but I think it's pretty damn smart.

Wouldnt they be just as well off by developing games for the Sony or MS platform and selling their own "special" controllers? Sega doesnt seem to be devastated without a platform. The big N should wake up and do the same...

I really enjoy this website, and I feel I'd like to give back to the community now and then. So lets make it every month. I'll do a little write-up with some opinions and observations on the industry. I'm also a HUGE sports fanatic, so here and there ill throw in a few sports picks :P. ESPN does something similair to this.
While im no expert on sports or gaming, I've been an huge gamer and sports fan my whole life. My house is basically all the big games and all the big sports 24/7.
BUYING :
Nintendo - The Marketings right, doesnt require a shift in lifestyle to play and is putting the emphasis on innovation and gameplay, this is the kind of company gamers dream of. Nintendo is shaping up more and more. At 150$, wow. Simply wow. DS Online Launch was great as well, very fun.
Tekken5 - I recently got to play Tekken 5 (Yeah I know, its been around awhile) in depth, and this game just oozes depth, oozes depth like Smash Bros. It's easily on my top 5 fighters game, and comes in a close 3rd with MvC2.
IGN - Way to make a revolution channel 6 months late. I normally wouldn't bother to buy, but you have actually had some interesting stuff on the revolution channel so far.
Super Mario Strikers - Okay, if you havnt had this yet, DO SO. I've had it for a weekish due to a friend that works at blockbuster and got it a little early. This game simply blew me away. Its a great way to spend some time WITH FRIENDS, and ill get to that later. But me and my friends are huge mario tennis/smash bros/baseball/kart players and we all loved this. But I sat down in my free time, and this simply doesnt measure up in single player wise. If you got the friends, and you got the cube. Buy this game.
SPORTS
Carolina Panthers - They've been my superbowl pick since the beggining of the season, and I think they're starting to come into stride.
Jermaine Taylor vs. Bernard Hopkins - Great fight. Anyone who missed it can see it again on the tenth on a delay cast.
Exclusive Delay Broadcast on HBO
Jermain Taylor vs. Bernard Hopkins 2 airs Saturday, December 10 on HBO at 10:00pm ET/ 7:00pm PT
SELLING :
Microsoft - The launch of november wasnt all that thrilling, the biggest hype is the seemingly endless amounts of money people will pay on ebay for a system. I personally have gotten to play the system alot, and while the controller is an upgrade and feels and looks nice, I just cant seem to jump of the bandwagon completely. Yes, the graphics are nice, but they arent worth 400 dollars, or 700 if I want to play with 4 friends. Tally in the Xbox live accnt money, a high res tv to enjoy the system, and as an college student I simply cant afford to play X360. BTW, this system, IS LOUD!
EA - Another month of "WTF, EA, how can you get away with this?" So many mishaps, so little time. Only so many times will John Madden climb you out of the whole you bury yourself in everytime you launch a new game.
SONY - Are you done with the PSP? Boy, im glad I dont own one.
RARE - Perfect Dark Zero dissapointed me in a way. Overhyped. Go back to making donkey kong games.
Need For Speed Franchise - Take the damn horse out behind the barn and shoot it already. This franchise is dying, and dying fast. You now spit out the NFS games like they're a flavor of the month. I swear it, they get worse everytime somehow. With the latest "most wanted" game, it takes the already dead horse and beats it some more by throwing in the SURPRISE, illegal street racing game attitude, yet again. Who makes it? Surprise... EA Games.
SPORTS
Philidelphia Eagles - Monday Night LOLBall?
Baltimore Ravens - Personally, they are my favorite team. I'm a huge fan of hardcore defenses and solid running games. 5 Years ago they were Superbowl Champions. Now... they're barely beating the Texans. I blame the quarterback and Jamal Lewis's so-so season. I wouldnt directly blame Jamal, because almost every defense is gonna run a full box vs. Kyle Boller or his backup. Ouch! So I gotta sell.
Bret Favre - Its time to hang up the towel. Start the rookie and teach him before you retire and abandon the organization that helped make you what you are. Pass on the legend of Bret Favre.
Until next time, ciao.

Although I'm a little disappointed about the rumored hardware, the same thing was said about the Gamecube, and that little box still produced some killer visuals so I agree that it won't be a significant difference between the consoles.
I'm super excited to see media on the actual titles!
