Late Night Consoling
by Chris Remo, Nov 18, 2005 8:10pm PSTWeekend time!
- After months of gamers speculating that Microsoft is deliberately engineering an Xbox 360 supply shortage in order to create false demand, the company has responded. Peter Moore claims to have "seen all the conspiracy theories," but Microsoft is "trying to get as many units into retail as we possibly can." It is overwhelmingly likely that Moore is being completely honest. It is already difficult to generate high yield for an electronics product such as Xbox 360, which uses recent technology that is not yet widely available, especially when tying it to a two-week worldwide launch window. Recently, more and more retailers have been anticipating a shortage of supply, and Microsoft recently admitted there may be lower quantities shipped than previously expected. It would be completely unnecessary for Microsoft to exascerbate the situation even more by withholding units. If you're looking for an Xbox 360 and you aren't on a current preorder list, know that your troubles are probably not the result of corporate sleight of hand.

[xbox360] - Metal Gear director Hideo Kojima and his team have been busy lately. They're currently working on the highly-anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3), an unrevealed Revolution game, Metal Gear Acid 2 (PSP), and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (PS2), and now Kojima has announced that his team will also develop another PSP title. The notice comes by way of the designer's blog, though this particular entry has not yet been translated into English. "The issue is, it will feature a completely new system, so we need to learn if it'll be accepted," said the frequently cryptic Kojima. "We'll have to make a prototype and have it play-tested. It'll play with a system that's different from traditional games. That'll be its selling point. Will it be accepted, or will it be rejected? We're going to see how it goes." The game is still in planning, so few further details were given, though it was announced that it would be both directed and produced by Metal Gear Acid 2 director Shinta Nojiri. Nojiri previously did script work on various Metal Gear Solid games. Kojima's specific involvement is yet to be determined, but it is likely he will give input during development.

[psp] - Joystiq reports that WarioWare creator Hirofumi Matsuoka (erroneously referred to as Hiroshishi Matsuoka in the Joystiq article) revealed to Japanese gaming site Gpara that he is currently overseeing titles in development for Nintendo DS and Revolution. It was not stated whether the games for either system would be part of the WarioWare franchise, which has seen life on Game Boy Advance, GameCube, and DS. As part of Nintendo's R&1 team, Matsuoka did design work on the NES and SNES iterations of the Metroid series, so his development background does span a bit of a range, though he is certainly not currently working on a Metroid title given that there are Metroid games in development for both DS and Revolution by other teams.

[ds] [nintendo] - Adding to the several games revealed for portable systems today, Koei has announced that it is bringing its strategy RPG Uncharted Waters to both DS and PSP. Known in Japan as Daikoukai Jidai IV: Rota Nova, the game is new version of one part in a series. It was originally released for PS1 in 1999. The game has the player vying for control of the 16th century seas, amassing a naval army, engaging in trade, and managing resources. The games are set for a February release in Japan, with no North American date yet given.
Koei Charts One For Portables
[ds] [gamecube] - The most recently weekly sales charts have been released. This week sees the DS continue its hardware dominance, with 41% market share. The PSP did well also, with 26% market share, followed by the PS2 with 16%. Game Boy Advance took 13%, GameCube took 4%, and Xbox took .1%. On the software side, PS2 and DS each took four slots of the top 10, with Nintendo's Brain Training (DS) and Gentle Brain Exercises (DS) still showing strong sales. The #1 slot went to Nintendo's Mario Party 7 (GCN), followed by Spike's Shinobido Imashine (PS2) at #2. Somewhat surprisingly, EA Canada's NBA Live 06 (PS2) made its debut at #5.

The first thing I noticed was that the display they were using (a Samsung unit) had the contrast set far too high and the brightness was toned down some - as a result, things that were dark were REALLY dark and it threw off the whole asthetic experience. That being said, it definately was running at 720p, which certainly gave it a very clean image.
The textures thrown around in Kameo and King Kong are definately leagues ahead of what you're seeing from an Xbox, however they're nothing new for anyone running a half-way decent PC. Kong looked especially good up close, and his 'fur' splines et. al. were well done (however I had to try a few times to get a good look - see above). The T-Rex I was fighting was another story. He looked rather unimpressive, sporting a far lower polygon count than I had hoped. As for Kameo, I was less than impressed with Kameo's (the character) polygon count (far too many hard edges and sharp point for a main character in a next-gen game), yet pretty much every other model shown looked great. I do have an issue with the specular highlighting used in the fortress demo level - it made the ground seem as if it was covered with slime or made from plastic - pretty much the DooM 3 treatment.
The controller fit well into my hands, and as I have had experience with the original Xbox controller-S I knew exactly what I was doing with this guy.
After trying each game out for a while, I watched a couple of the videos they preloaded for the system showcasing their upcoming games. PGR3, as expected, looks great - HOWEVER I was quite dissapointed that the shadows shown had z-buffer issues (where you get intervals cut out of the shadow where the z-buffer didn't have any information). Amped3 looks like an Xbox 1 game with slightly better character models and snow effects, but a greatly improved view distance and LOD along with a far crisper image.
The video for Ghost Recon looked amazing. I do hope that the level of quality shown is achievable ingame.
In all it looks like the system has a lot of potential but nothing that really showcases it for the moment.

Last month, on a 5 p.m. conference call with their China-based colleagues, Mr. Holmdahl's team discovered one factory wasn't producing at the level Microsoft needed to hit its holiday season forecast. Alarmed, Mr. Holmdahl soon led a team of engineers to China, where he found that certain test equipment was bogging down as production speeded up. Ten hard days of troubleshooting and writing new software ultimately fixed the problem, Mr. Holmdahl says. "We were really able to crank up the volume," he says.

3 DVD set
1st DVD will be the main game with some tweaks such as the 3rd person camera mode along with new difficulty sets: Super Duper Easy and European Extreme; a third person camera view is added, offering a camera that is 'lower to the ground' than the high flying version usually found in the games
2nd DVD will have the multiplayer goodness along with Duel Mode for bosses, a Secret Theater mode featuring the funny cinematics that were created in-game by the MGS team for the official site, and it includes the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (!)
3rd one will be the cinematics of the game provided for people that are just interested in the story and are finding the game difficult to get through.
It looks like it's slated to come out in Japan on the 22nd of December and from Gamestop's release schedule, looks slated for the States...next year in March. Man, that's a long wait.
Then I get sad thinking this is what BG&E2 could look like :(
