Uwe Boll Reveals His Secrets
by Chris Remo, Nov 18, 2005 10:30am PSTFilmmaker Uwe Boll, responsible for an inexplicably high number of past and upcoming films adapted from video games, recently attended a screening of his latest cinematic venture BloodRayne, which somehow features such appreciated thespians as Ben Kingsley and Michael Madsen (and Meat Loaf). In a meeting that is pretty high up there on the Crazy Internet Movie People meter, Boll chatted it up a bit with Ain't it Cool News writer Harry Knowles, who revealed some of his tricks and experience in making his films. Here are a couple choice bits of wisdom from Dr. Boll: - "They were better than actors. We looked for local Romanian actresses, but there they are all from the theater and act very broadly. For 150 euros a piece the whores would be naked and do as they were told. It was better." - Make every attempt to secure actors at the last possible minute to snag big names who happen to have holes in their schedules. BloodRayne wasn't even cast until two weeks before shooting. When confronted about the heated "discussion" that frequently erupts on the internet, Boll apparently said, "Please stop, please," then followed up with, "Yes, it is fun to make fun of the German, because I Nazi and make movies with that Nazi Money." Indeed, Dr. Boll, indeed.

It pains me to say this, but I agree with Uwe Boll on this one, War Of The Worlds needed less 'HAY LOOK, A HAPPY ENDING AFTERALL' IMO

Alone in the Dark? House of the Dead? Bloodrayne? Far Cry?
About the most prestigious of the games he's gotten ahold of seems to be Dungeon Siege, and even that isn't especially popular, especially not in the mainstream.
I often wonder if that's intentional, so the average joe public doesn't realize it's a videogame movie.

How many of you would honestly decline the opportunity to do what he does to build a nice fat, $50-100M nest egg for yourself using his business model for 5-10 years?
I know we'd all like to make better movies and think we could, but the man has found a Producers-esque racket that's not going to go away as so many countries have the same loopholes outside of Germany.
Could you turn down 100M of money for your family/estate on the principle that you didn't want to be thought of as a Uwe Boll?
If so, how much money would it take for you to sacrifice your personal quality controls?

"I found it to be a degree or two better than ALONE IN THE DARK – but that’s like smelling your shit 3 days in a row and saying on the third day, “Ya know, I think this smells a little better than yesterday’s.†It’s still shit."

If that line isn't in the next Wolfentein game, there is no justice in the world. Ofcourse if it is, and they in turn give the movie rights to Boll, the universe my explode
