Today, the major competitive gaming event that is the World Cyber Games Grand Final begins in Singapore. The event features 700 gamers competing for 67 countries in a variety of games. Like most professional gaming, the WCG is heavily focused on PC competition, with events in Counter Strike: Source (the event with the most money at stake, a total of $135,000 to be awarded among its winners), Starcraft: Brood War, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, Need for Speed Underground 2, and FIFA Soccer 2005. Console gaming gets a nod as well, with Halo 2 (a distant second in terms of total money awarded at $45,000) and Dead or Alive Ultimate, both for Xbox.

The World Cyber Games is the world’s first “Cyber Game Festival”, designed to build a healthy cyber culture. The best gamers around the world gather into different cities to share the excitement and fun of the game tournaments. The World Cyber Games is a stage of harmony and friendship, where everyone is invited.
Last year's finals in San Francisco marked the first time the event was held outside of Korea, and the 2006 event, which is scheduled to be held in Monza, Italy, will be the first in Europe.
