by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 07, 2005 9:58am PSTInfogrames has announced that Eugen Systems is working on an expansion pack for the excellent Act of War: Direct Action, released earlier this year. The untitled expansion pack will be released next March and will feature improved graphics and game features, as wel as naval combat.
Eugen Systems pushed the visual standard of RTS games to a new level with Act of War: Direct Action, a game which attracted extremely impressive review scores across the globe. The expansion to Act of War takes the visuals a step further, whilst simultaneously raising the bar in terms of gameplay. The wealth of original features include modern naval combat with bump-mapping and physics, fully customizable multiplayer games, mercenary units, improved control system, new units, revised aircraft and artillery, an entirely new campaign set in a new real-world location, new maps, and additional multiplayer enhancements.

Eugen's tried to ensure that the units in Act of War retain their correct proportions - or at least come reasonably close - so naval combat was obviously a challenge. Destroyers, aircraft carriers - these are big things. To achieve this, Eugen's worked with the camera so that you're still just as close to the action on dry land, but out to sea it zooms out to a more appropriate vantage point."
...
Mercenary units, meanwhile, might sound like a shortcut to power but they're actually envisaged as a key defence against tank-rushing. Eugen noticed that a lot of novice players would build up a huge stock of cash and fail to use it effectively, while more efficient players were left to wipe the floor with them - now you'll be able to call in the merc's using your excess funds if you're under threat. They cost more, but if they don't get obliterated you can recoup some of it, so it's not all bad.

OK so here it is: yes, we're introducing naval warfare as the main new feature (among many) in the expansion pack. There are subs, helicopter carriers, amphibious assault ships, corvettes, stealth destroyers, and more. There are anti-sub choppers that deploy sonar bouys. There are Harpoon missiles, ship-launched Tomahawks, torpedoes, anti-missile SAMs and AAA, etc... the whole nine yards.

It sounds like they are aiming high for the expansion. The new units and features sound promising!
