by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 07, 2005 7:51am PSTStill making my way through Call of Duty 2, which has been a really enjoyable game so far. Some really cool levels in there, graphics look good and AI is pretty good except for occasionally prefering to run into grenades instead of away from them. Just solid all around. In other news, there is a Halo movie script review on Latino Review. There are spoilers in there but if don't want to read it at all lets just say the review is really positive. Movie: Just stand outside so chief can translate my Iraqi ass map, okay?

It was a smaller show this year than 2003, which a lot less stuff. People I talked to said that 2004 was even larger than 2003 so this looked even smaller to them. Too bad.
Still, always cool to see all this old hardware together and a bunch of old computer whiz geeks fawning and talking over everything.
Some pics - semi crappy because of the estremely low lighting but some shackers might find them interesting:
http://stuka.shackspace.com/VCF8pre/VCF8_000.jpg - The Woz himself. Everytime I see him I am struck by how humble and enthusiastic he is. He talks about any of those stories we've all heard about Apple and Jobs and HP and all that as if they were happening right now. I have a lot of love and admiration for this guy.
http://stuka.shackspace.com/VCF8pre/VCF8_009.jpg - A replica of The Differential Engine completely built with Meccano. It worked too. Amazing.
http://stuka.shackspace.com/VCF8pre/VCF8_048.jpg - A detail of the tabulation cylinders. I was fascinated with this thing.
http://stuka.shackspace.com/VCF8pre/VCF8_029.jpg - These guys had an amazing collection of classic games. Shown here are the Atari cartridges. They had working Coleco, Intellivision, Jaguar and Lynx systems and cartridges among others.
http://stuka.shackspace.com/VCF8pre/VCF8_036.jpg - No one could tell for sure what this was. Keep in mind the room is full of computer uber-geeks who know the guy who decided that the underscore character should be on keyboards and what company made the buttons on a Univac. The general concensus was that it's probably a missile dialing device, the thing they used to program missiles with. It looked the part, for sure. I found it really interesting. Its owner kept telling me that I owned it since my taxes paid for it.
http://stuka.shackspace.com/VCF8pre/VCF8_037.jpg - You know that TeleType font in HTML? This is where it came from.
http://stuka.shackspace.com/VCF8pre/VCF8_055.jpg - Fuck Battlefield 2, this was the original. A Psygnosis game for the Amiga (they went on to create Wipeout for the PSX and bought by Sony) that allowed you to get into all kinds of vehicles in an open battlefield - chopper, planes, tanks, hovercraft, etc. I fucking loved this game.
http://stuka.shackspace.com/VCF8pre/VCF8_081.jpg - The other day there was a thread about Apple stealing from Xerox PARC and all that... well, here's the Alto computer. At VCF6 in 2003 they had 5 working Altos running the Xerox Star system. I logged a good couple of hours using those things then. This one's part of the permanent collection so it's not powered on.
There were also tons of old Apple hardware, Amigas, Ataris, Commodores, old switch computers, etc., but overall simply not as cool as previous years.

Also, when will modern science develop pretzel technology that allows salt to actually stick to the pretzel so I don't wind up with a bag of bald pretzels with some salt in the bottom of it?

The game just feels so right. The way they've moved away from the abstract console controller to the mock guitar makes the whole experience so much more satisfying. I know guitar freaks tried to do this same thing, but Harmonix has really mastered the idea here.

If you're all about being independent woman, go for it, it's the 90s... keep your last name.
Or if you don't want to stick out, or hate your current last name, take your husband's last name.
But ffs this indecisive dash shit has got to stop. Hello Ms. Gibson-Origliosso, newsflash: NO ONE TAKES YOU SERIOUSLY. We all laugh at your dumbass last name every time we see it. Quit being such a pussy and pick one or the other.
And saddling your children with this garbage should be considered child abuse.

I been trying out different builds lately trying to find one that best suits me. I pretty much did combat all the way to 60 and for a while now I have been subtility. Now I want to test the other tree so as far as assasination goes, is Seal Fate worth getting? I dunno if I can live without preparation or improved sap but if it = more damage I'm up for it.

also Brandon Lloyds catch was so utterly amazing, it's a shame there was a holding call at the line of scrimmage.

But damn I miss building PCs. Sure, I build my own but thats obviously not an every day thing. One of my favorite things when it comes to getting a PC is balance, especially when it comes to price. There have been periods where it has been clear cut. However, in almost every component, there is so much selection now. Yeesh.
For example, the balance between a 7800GT, 7800GTX and a 7800GTX thats been OC'd. Or an AMD X2 4400 and 4200. Memory is always fun. PC3200 2-2-2 or PC4000 3-2-3. Hard drives are also great. There is that scale of "but for $10 more..." It seems since the days of the KT133A that individual motherboard performance has really started to narrow but starting with the AMD Athlon Slot A line, there has been an accessories push. Go with the motherboard that has 8 SATA and only one onboard nic or 4 SATA and dual onboard Gig-E?!
Anyways, I still have fun doing all of these comparisons. I don't keep up with hardware like I used to since it always makes me want to buy but this is still good clean geek fun.

Movie #1
A bunch of assassins are called to this building where there's a contest. Basically, the last assassin standing, gets the prize money. This guys that looked like Leonard Nemoy was one of the lead assassins.
Movie #2
6 or 7 teenagers are in this biodome-like environment and there is an alien disease that gets spread through sex. There's nudity like every 5 minutes and everyone ends up getting with someone else. The only girl that doesn't get the disease/get naked is the only hot one among them. Go fig.
Anyway, does anyone know what I'm talking about? I would love to see these movies again. I mean, they were flat out terrible movies, but for some reason, I remember enjoying them. Not in the same way I enjoy Snatch or Pulp Fiction, but just in a dumbed out way.

note the game tested on that page,
notice how the fastest single card in all the benches is.... the X1800XT
An ATI card topping the field in an OpenGL game... ATI ARE FASTER IN FUCKING DOOM 3 fuck!
The 7800GTX wins in HL2 Lost Coast and Serious Sam,
the X1800XT wins in FEAR, Battlefield 2, Guild Wars, Doom 3, 3dmark
testing methods page: http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2005q4/geforce-6800gs/index.x?pg=2
Gentleman, I've been saying the X1800XT has potential, seems tuning is starting to make it show :)
