Quake 4 GONE GOLD!
by Maarten Goldstein, Oct 03, 2005 3:04pm PDTFor all the doubters out there thinking Quake 4 would not hit its mid-October release date, fear no more as Activision just let us know that the game has gone gold and is off to manufacturing. The PC version of the game will be shipping to stores October 18.
The long awaited sequel to QUAKE II, QUAKE 4 enlists gamers in the role of Matthew Kane, a member of the Earth Defense Force's legendary Rhino Squad, to penetrate deep into the heart of the Strogg war machine and engage in a series of heroic missions to destroy the barbaric alien race. "On October 18, QUAKE is dialing it up to 4.0 on the Richter Scale with this new chapter in Earth's war against the Strogg," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "Fusing an epic war-story driven single player campaign, and fast-paced QUAKE III Arena inspired multiplayer, QUAKE 4 delivers a gaming experience fans will be raving about for years."

I'm really looking forward to this one.
Maybe I'll throw in Q2 for a quick romp to get ready for this.

On the one hand I like Quake III a lot still and I hope this doesn't inspire some sort of exodus.
On the other hand it might be nice to see the same sort of play in a new game/engine (since DOOM 3 obviously didn't do this)

The press release marketing kills me though, how can Todd come up with such over the top quotes without making himself cringe.

Quake 4 was outsourced to Raven. Quake & Doom games should be strickly ID developed games.
Not based on next-gen tech. Looks too much like Doom 3 with that goofy plastic look to it.
There was no Quake 4 test. Why not guys?
Should have been called Quake 2 - <insert sub-title here> since it's based off that game.
Just seems so generic looking.
Mechs? Um.... why?
Raven has a LONG history of making game load times horribly long. I.e. Star Trek Voyager vs Heavy Metal FAKK 2 by Ritual. I mean, Ritual's was freaking instantanious. Better not take more than 5 seconds to load, I mean, can they please stop that long load time shit? I'm really fed up with it. :(
With Raven, we'll probably get a nice story but lets hope it's not as short as Star Trek Voyager. That game of which, story/immersion-wise was way ahead of it's time.
Why make it so important to spoil a certain part of the game in the game previews? I'm talking about the character gets stroggified at one point. Why do that? That would have been a hell of a cool surprise.

Pros:
+ Q3 MP
+ Q2 story line
+ Vehicle support
+ Various gameplay elements
+ Doom 3 style story telling and ingame scenes
Cons:
- Not by id Software (I prefer id's game design, never enjoyed Raven games but maybe now?)
- Not a nextgen engine
Im so looking forward to the Multiplayer part. More then single player. I just miss those days...quake...While i dig BF2, UT and all the other more team based games, there's nothing like a good DM game. The days of 1 on 1. I still love Dm2. And the Grizzlygrotto...ahhhhh

I am someone who agrees that id makes great engines, but lack the ability to make great games (Although the original Quake was awesome).
Unfortunately, I don't think Q4 will be a day one buy for me, if ever. It looks pretty meh to me.

Been the same since the doom days... even though doom was amazing, it was a very simple game at the end of the day. Heretic, Hexen (and their sequels), SiN, SoF, etc. were the games that actually used the engines to their fullest.
