Honestly, think in the future here for a second - imagine in the future we have a game that's nearly photo realistic, with thousands of players on screen at once, with commanding officers, squads, soldiers with different ranks and abilities, etc.
Who really cares if it's WWII or sci-fi at that point?
Immersion and replayability for me comes far above genre. Coincidentally enough, most games are lacking in both, and the theme of the game gets blamed instead since games don't do enough to differentiate themselves from their past derivatives.
For that reason alone, BF1942 and Operation Flashpoint score really highly for me, than say.. Brothers in Arms.
