City of Heroes Causing Illness
by Chris Remo, Sep 20, 2005 10:59am PDTGameRifts.com is reporting on a rather odd effect being caused by NCSoft's MMORPG City of Heroes. Apparently, an in-game effect that is part of a "Sonic Powers Buff" is causing headaches and nausea in a huge number of the game's players. The news post links to three of many threads on the game's official forums filled with players citing those specific effects as triggering the symptoms. Some speculated that the effects are causing a reaction in those suffering from epilepsy, but that seems to have been discounted.
Instead of a hot patch to correct the issue, NCSoft was informed by Cryptic that a patch would go in with the next update to correct this, after it's been through test. Now, we are talking possibly months before this fix will be put in place. If players are reporting illness due to a change, should not the change be reverted, especially when this issue was reported during the original test phase prior to being implemented onto the live servers? The real kicker is that less-than-mature players are using this beneficial tactic within game to grief other players.

It wasn't a "change" that started this debacle, it was the release of the regular content expansions to the game. The Sonic Resonance is an entire new powerset that they'd have to "revert" - and how would all those people already playing their Sonics feel about that?
"Possibly months" is claptrap as well. The latest patch to the expansion went out yesterday, a mere 5 days after the expansion. For something like this, where several powers have to be reworked and special FX completely redone, I doubt a "hotpatch" is possible. I guess they could remove the FX entirely? Yeah, that's useful.
Oh, and the "many" threads is more like, um, 3.

1 in 3 people suffer from epilepsy and dont even realize it.
Epilepsy is just not seizures, shaking, foaming at the mouth like most tools believe... Thats extreme Epilepsy
Mild Epilepsy is headaches, nausea, blurred vision.
Motion Sickness is caused by the movement of fluid in the inner ear...
You can NOT get motion sickness from a monitor or TV....
Most people will argue 'No its motion sickness!' because they are afraid to admit they may suffer from a disorder

It might not be an epilepsy effect(although it could be that too) instead it might simply be disorientation and motion sickness. Certain effects can do this, especially with prolonged exposure. Trying to concentrate too hard to "work through" certain effects could most certainly induce this.
I'm surprised there aren't more serious studies into stuff like this.
