Late Night Consoling: Early Edition

This is going to be a pretty quick and dirty LNC. I'm about to head off again after getting back late last night (I took a visit to Valve, so expect to see some Lost Coast and Day of Defeat soon), but I'm squeezing out a bit of console news for you.

  • Cord Overheating Again

    [ps2]
There's another recall of console AC adapters, but this one's for the PS2, not the Xbox. Certain batches of the new slim PS2 manufactured in 2004 have an overheating problem with their power bricks. Check here to see if your slim PS2 is one of the affected units and to arrange for a free replacement of the adapter. Approximately 3.5 million PS2s worldwide may have the problem.
  • Video Games Live and Growing

    [ps2] [xbox] [gamecube]
The Video Games Live series of concert events is adding more shows to its roster after already holding multiple successes. The tour, which presents a wide variety of video game music played by a symphony and chorus, has over twenty-five more shows in 2005 starting October 29.
  • Sony Merges Studios

    [ps2]
In a move that continues to make it even more difficult to figure out just who should get credit for actually developing a game (a problem the publishers of this industry are only too happy to exascerbate), Sony has announced that all of its worldwide dev studios will now be named Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. This applies to developers in North America, Europe, and Japan. The "new" group will be headed up by SCEE exec VP Phil Harrison. SCEI president Ken Kutaragi claims the move is to "create new entertainment experiences that will bring out the best of the technology in platforms such as PSP, PlayStation 3 and beyond," though it was not specified how such dramatic goals will be reached through name-changing.
  • Peretzman Leaves Nintendo

    [nintendo]
Nintendo's well-loved vice president of sales, Randy Peretzman, will be leaving the company he called home for two decades. Peretzman helped launch the original NES after joining Nintendo of America in its youth, and is considered a key contributor to the company's success. This news comes on the heels of two widely-publicized departures from Activision in the form of publishing president Kathy Vrabek and president and chairman Ron Doornink.
  • Devil May Get Special Edition

    [ps2]
According to Famitsu publisher Enterbrain by way of GameSpot, it seems that Capcom is readying a special edition of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening (PS2) that will be unveiled at Tokyo Game Show. On the other hand, 1UP claims that the Famitsu news is that Devil May Cry 4 is on the way. Looks like one of the two sites is having mistranslation issues, or are they just reading different reports from the same publisher? 1UP also notes that Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3) is confirmed, unsurprisingly, as well as some kind of "custom peripheral" to go with Metal Gear Ac!d 2 (PSP).
  • Micro Sells in Japan

    [gba]
Nintendo's new Game Boy Micro launched successfully in Japan on Tuesday, though it did not match the sell-out sales numbers of the Game Boy Advance SP (unsurprising given the Micro is the third iteration of the Advance line). Reuters reported retailers claiming that 70% of in-stock units were pre-ordered before the launch (as opposed to 100% in the case of the SP), and that the Famicom-style unit has been the most popular.
  • Burnout Legends DS

    [ds]
In the midst of Burnout Legends' PSP launch, EA has confirmed that a DS version ship in November. Previously, it was may-as-well-be-confirmed, but now you know for sure.
  • Misc. Q&As/Features

The always-quality IGNCube has compiled a quick FAQ about Nintendo's TGS somewhat-presence.

Console Game Of The Morning [Submit Yours!]

Ace Combat 4 for the PlayStation 2. "Intense dog fighting, great storyline, missiosn you can replay 1000 times...the only thing bad about this game is that it ends!" (submitted by sexninja!!!!)

  • I picked up Burnout 3, Rebelstar, and Nintendogs at Best Buy a couple of days ago.

Burnout 3 rocks the house. It's a huge upgrade from Burnout 2, but markedly more difficult. I guess it will take some time for me to get good at it, which is cool. "A minute to learn, a lifetime to master." Hehe.

Rebelstar is... interesting. There are some glitches in it, especially in the music (what's with the random beeps?), and the camera could be zoomed out a bit (scroll, scroll, scroll), but overall it's pretty interesting.

Nintendogs is for the wife. Hopefully I can get her to play it. She's not a gamer. Yet.
