Might As Well Face It, You're Addicted To Love Games

By way of the Los Angeles Times, GameSpot has a feature up about the growing problem of video game addiction in Korea and the national attention it is receiving in large part due to some high-profile deaths resulting from neglect. Last month, a man died after spending 50 hours straight in an internet cafe, and in June a four-month-old girl suffocated when her parents were gaming at a cafe. Gaming cafes are inexpensive and common in Korea, and many consider gaming a cheap and effective way to relieve real-world stress.

According to the Korea Times, the neglect of everyday responsibilities stemming from online game addiction is nothing new to the Korea Agency for Digital Opportunity and Promotion (KADO), a government-funded agency that has witnessed an increase in addicted online gamers contacting them for help.
The agency saw its counseling increase fourfold from 2,243 cases in 2003 to 8,978 in 2004, and it is estimated that this year the number will rise to 12,500. KADO plans to add more facilities to its current count of 40, and it is currently sending psychologists into internet cafes to conduct research and warn potential gaming addicts face to face. The article notes that while drug and alcohol education is in good shape, parents and teachers see little reason to feel concerned about excessive computer use, since technological competence is becoming more and more important in today's society.
