by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 03, 2005 2:46pm PDTAccording to this post on the Age of Empires 3 Heaven forums, an Age of Empires 3 demo should be out this month. The 375mb demo will include 2 singleplayer scenarios as well as 2 random maps playable as one of two civilizations. Thanks Evil Avatar.

Building castle walls is probably my favorite thing about the series. Other RTS games lacking this feature feel "naked".
Looking forward to this.

I love it when companies release demos before a products release. This is something that seems to have disappeared on a lot of high profile games. A demo shows the game is polished and that a developer is proud of the product prior to its release. Of course BF2 was not polished but the demo was great fun and is the reason I purchased the game. Through my pc game purchasing history I have been influenced by many great demos(ut 2004, return to castle Wolfenstein, q3 test, SiN, Painkiller, Serious Sam). Back in the day the demo cd was my main reason for subscribing to PC Gamer.
Demos > Reviews
Now my purchase decisions are purely based on reviews which means I know I've missed a lot of games I most likely would of enjoyed. Plus myself, and many others start to hold opinions which are just inaccurate. Reviews are rushed to the scene in an attempt to beat competiting reviewers, thus many crappy reviews are written. Once a crappy review is written all other review sites then look at that review and are majorly. One large criticism I hear over and over is the flashlight in Doom 3. Many of the people I hear complain about this never even played the game. They just read the negative reviews and then bring this up whenever they hear the game mentioned. If the flashlight in the game was a problem for you then you are a moron. Imagine if Black and White had a demo prior to its release. It would not half received 1/4 of its purchases and the reviews would have been much different. I recall a very shit review of an older game Fakk2 by Ritual using the Quake 3 engine. The first reviewer beat the game using cheats so they could get their review out first. They listed the biggest con of the game was it being too short. They beat the game in 13 hours using cheats therefore it was short. Then every review following that claimed the game was very short. Most likely those reviewers didn't even finish the game they just read the first review. The game is far from short for a 3rd person action game. Next time you read the first typically "exclusive" review for a game find any inaccuracies then watch as other sites repeat these same mistakes over and over throughout the games launch week. In short, demos released prior to a game’s release are awesome if the game itself is awesome. This is way too long, I need to limit my coffee intake before my next post.
