BF2 Stat Whore Crackdown
by Steve Gibson, Aug 31, 2005 2:02pm PDTLooks like stat whoring is bugging the folks at EA enough to start cracking down on it a bit. Here is a note from EA concerning some planned crackdown on people being naughty that was sent out to ranked server admins.
We have noticed an increase in behavior where leased servers are being used by clans solely to pad players stats, even to the extent where clans are institutionalizing rules that forbid normal play. Currently the favored method is for player admins to set rules where players must use either a knife or Pistol, players must revive each other, and players must not take flags. This creates environments where players gain stats unrealistically and creates an imbalance in the ranked server playing field. In our opinion, these players are breaking EA's Terms of Service, and we have begun taking action on the clans involved. However, clan coordination to this extreme requires us to create a long-term solution for this (separate from any scoring changes in 1.03). [snip]In general, I've enjoyed the entire rewards/badges system in Battlefield 2. Having those cute little awards pop up every so often telling you how super awesome you are is really fun. I mean everyone knows on the inside that they are awesome, but it's nice to have some validation in your life by a computer program.

Anyhow, here are my abbreviate system specs:
P4 2.4, 1gig RAM, 6800GT, audigy gamer soundcard (soundcard not this generation)
If you need more detail, say so.
ALL of my drivers are updated. Vid, sound, mobo, etc.
I'm happy with the power of the system... it can do CS:S on 1280x1024, max details, 6xAA, etc etc. Other games perform similarly.
BF2, however, somehow brings my system to its knees. I can't even do 1024x768, medium-to-high detail, no AA, no EAX without getting tons of stuttering, 2 second+ long hitches, et cetera. I've tested these settings on a local server and I get around 80 fps, but online the performance sucks sucks sucks, badly. It's never 80fps... I'm guessing around 20-30 (very ballpark) or so but who knows, it stutters like a motherfucker.
What do I do to alleviate these issues? I know the game should be performing much more smoothly than it is... the stuttering and hitching isn't limited to specific situations. Any idea what I can do on the video, audio, internet, hard drive, whatever fronts to get some decent performance? I'm fucking tired as shit of this game underperforming.
If you need more details on anything, just ask.
What a comment on the 21st century gamer.
When Quake ruled, you knew if someone was leet or sucked. Today, team based games are designed to let mediocrities feel like winners, and if that stil isn't enough, pad your stats.
Safety in numbers, indeed. ;-)

It isn't perfect, but compared to the in-game browser, its near god-like.

They're freaking fun! You get to use the most humiliating kills possible. It's like indulging in dirty dirty college teen lovin over and over again.
WTH is their problem? Everyone must play the same way?
What about Kharkland only servers, or buggy only servers.
EA's no freaking fun. Of course, then it's going to be "no modded maps on ranked servers".

Maybe it's because I have two accounts, one of which I unlocked the medic weapon, and other the m92.. and neither are really rewarding.

When I see the top scores on the BF2 stats ranking list, I just laugh because I know about half of the top scores totally mean nothing and reflect blatant stats-padding and/or cheating. So if you're one of the cheating weiners, newsflash geniuses, we don't care if you're at the top when you had to cheat to do it, dumbass. LOL
I've heard some folks saying that the cheating is justified to unlock weapons but all you have to do is make a few different accounts and use each one to unlock a different weapon. Then you find the weapon you want to use for that particular match or day, and use that account. Viola! Instant access to all the weapons and you didn't even have to cheat to do it.
The problem is, this was supposed to not be possible to do from release. There was an interview with someone that asked if people or clans would be able to just sit there and kill/revive/heal each other over and over to inflate their stats. The EA guy stated that they had implemented systems to stop stats exploits.
Funnily enough, this is the second time EA or DICE have blatantly bullshitted their way through an interview. Remember when someone asked if the server browser would be as shitty in the release version as it was in the demo? "Oh no" they said, "the server browser wont be like the demo"
Hah, bunch of liars.

(sorry that's probably stating the obvious)

In your opinion? Rules are rules, surely? And they are either being broken, or they aren't? I've never heard a policeman say "in my opinion, you're breaking the law".
Strange phraseology, but great to see that they're doing something.
