Better to Have Loved and Lost...
by Chris Remo, Aug 30, 2005 9:15am PDTGameSpot has a feature up entitled Heartbreakers in which they discuss what they consider the ten most disappointing cancellations in game development. Yes, Fallout III is there. There are also six honorable mentions. Astonishingly, however, there is no mention of Sam & Max: Freelance Police in either the top 10 or the runners-up. Consider me outraged. I also remember the cancellation of WarCraft Adventures hitting me pretty hard back in the day. So what are your greatest lost loves, the games for which you were once counting down the days?

I had alot of fun with my 3DO and couldn't wait for the 2nd generation hardware.

I was following that games daily before it was canceled. They had some really great ideas... but they canceled the game because they thought UO was still too good to abandon... nice one guys...

The biggest bummer for me, though, wasn't actually a cancellation, but a game that was never announced. To this day, one of my favorite FPS is Terminator: Future Shock, along with it's addon, SkyNET. The world they created was so freaking cool. It oozed post-apocalyptic atmosphere. I always hoped Bethesda would release another Terminator game, as they did such a fantastic job with those games.

Would have brought the gameplay of X Com to a 3D format, something that is very desirable. But more importantly it had a good chance of being the first X-Com game in a long while not to suck big gay asses.
I still very much desire a game like that. I don't mind turn based combat but I'm not exactly crazy for it either. I can enjoy it, and I can enjoy real time fighting. So for me X-Com is not about being turn based and isometric. It's about capturin' aliens to perform experiments on them, researching their technologies to build yourself better armor and weapons, and constructing bases all across the world to effectively repell alien invasion and, eventually, remove the threat forever by invading Cydonia or whatever.
Oh, X-Com, what heartbreak you are.
Bleh...that game was cancelled when GT Interactive was absorbed into Infogrames. I cried many a night at not being able to play through that wonderfully started story line.
I don't remember a lot about it, just that it might be cool :(

That World should have been shut down the day Garriott left.

Zombies you ran over would stick to your car, and try to get you.

What happened to the developer? I swear I remember they were starting some new project back in 2003. Anyone have any idea?

I know they didn't, but please let me live in denial :(.
I wonder if the writer had the opportunity to play the leaked version of this fighter, because to say that it had nothing going for it is wrong. Two key unique gameplay elements were that it was four-player, and winning was determined by damage dealt (rather than "health" remaining) keeping things moving. It was actually a lot of fun, and the theme was bizzare enough to be kinda funny.
Though it would have created some negative publicity for sure, I suspect that may have been some of the marketing angle from the start.

Maybe not a cancelation, but the anouncement that it wasn't even on the table of projects being worked on makes me sad. Its been WAY too long since generals and zero hour came out. I need my RTS fix god damn it and I want it Red Alert 3 style!
