Unreal Tournament 2007 Preview
by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 19, 2005 8:51am PDTIGN got to sit down with Epic lead level designer James Brown at the Leipzig Games Convention, asking him about the upcoming Unreal Tournament 2007. The article touches on load times, the environments, and improved gameplay.
"The only load is when you join a server in UT 2007. Once that match ends, the game will pop you right into the next one." James explained that the streaming technology would let the engine anticipate the next bout and prepare for it, which will cut back on a lot of gaming downtime. Expect this to apply to the singleplayer ladder matches and to online engagements. Of course, UT will still provide competitive players an opportunity to check their scores and stats before rocketing them all into another round.

After playing Dungeon Siege 1 I realized "Holy shit it is liberating to play an entire game with only one loading screen!" It is so much less frustrating than sitting through downtime.
Then came Half Life 2 which I think was 15% less awesome because of the loading of new maps which totally broke the immersion.
Then comes BF2 which totally redefines loading. What seems like minutes of videos to load which you have to delete manually. Then you wait for the server browser screen to load, then you wait for what amounts to 1gb of game data to load, then when the map switches you do it again! It even takes a perceptible amount of time to unload the game. This is what they invented RAM for, so you can have 1.5-2gb and make SURE none of the game gets into the page file.
But even back after playing Dungeon Siege, I decided that streaming new data rather than loading in one chunk was the way of the future. And that a most excellent group like Epic is embracing this idea brings me hope for the future.
Also notable is that Mark Rein knows what the fuck, even though he probably didn't have anything to do with this.

Do away with the cheezy sports theme and the stupid character designs....back to UT damnit!
But most importantly, return CTF to the fun it was before the UT2k* series emerged.

Wow so it takes less than forever and a day to load a map? That is amazing.

Unreal Tourny and Quake3 just looked too similar in the way it showed colors and textire detail.
