Predictions of the 90s

by Steve Gibson, Jan 09, 2000 4:12am PST

Here's an interesting Salon.com story taking a look back at a few of those technology predictions that were being made for the 1990s. Just proves that you never really know for sure what's gonna happen. Here are my 3 favorite predictions:

- AOL is doomed - The pen computer device will render the PC obsolete - Television and the Web will converge.
Of course, those experts are now predicting the PC is gonna be obsolete again this decade now.... I'm pretty sure those are the same guys who said gasoline cars wouldnt be around anymore as well.

  • #14: So you seperate the water into hydrogen and oxygen, which REQUIRES energy, then you burn the hydrogen, which gives back energy (of the same amount--it\'s reacting it with oxygen to make water again).

Guess what? In the end you have no energy. But due to inefficiencies and heat losses, you actually require more energy.

Lesson: You can\'t run a car on water. (And don\'t respond saying you can. I\'m a 4th year Chem Engr. student, so don\'t argue with me about thermodynamics.)

However, some people propose separating the hydrogen and oxygen at a plant, then distributing the hydrogen for fuel. Ultimately, you still have to consume more energy SOMEWHERE, which means more coal-fired plants or other means of generating electricity.

  • NO!
They are really heavy cars (battery)

Who wants to hear a joke? A VERY FUNNY JOKE!

  • If someone really wants to try to have success with an alternative fuel vehicle they should try to go to Japan or Hawaii (if they want to stay in the states) where the gas prices are so insane. Japan has always been more into alternative energy sources anyhow, with their nuclear, geothermal, tidal, and wind generation research because of their lack of natural resources.

Then again, I just saw an ad for the new Honda gas/electric hybrid.... Is it really that far off now?

Fuel cell technology is going to be big in the next 25 years. I drive by one of the companies doing core development on fuel cells every day. They have a house right next door that runs off of fuel cells, with no hook-up to the main powerlines.
