Late Night Consoling
by Chris Remo, Aug 01, 2005 8:00pm PDTNo time for an intro today! Except for that!
- At a Microsoft analyst meeting, Bill Gates vaguely downplayed the differences in capability of the Xbox 360 and the PS3, saying "Our view is basically we've got a Ferrari, they've got a Ferrari. Our Ferrari is leaving the starting line substantially before their Ferrari is, and in most races that's a very nice thing." Nintendo president Satoru Iwata declined to reveal what kind of car Nintendo has, reportedly revealing that "[it] is a very special car, and we know gamers will be pleased when then see it," adding that "this car has a special surprise!"

[xbox] [ps2] - Remember that video from Square at E3, the one that recreated the opening sequence from Final Fantasy VII? You know, one of the videos that was supposedly a "tech demo" but was really just pre-rendered footage. Well, at the time, Square Enix representatives said it was nothing more than a demo, and there were no plans to remake FF7 for PS3. Now, according to GameSpot, Square Enix is saying that they haven't finalized their plans for future FF7 content, and that they have noted the enormous fan response to the video. Though they haven't committed to anything, it's certainly suggestive.
Possible Final Fantasy VII Remake (Maybe, Perhaps)
[ps2] - Multiple reports over the past few days have indicated that later versions of the Xbox 360 (that is, not the ones ready for launch) will support the HD-DVD format, but in reality it looks like that's still just speculation based on a month-old quote. Even if the 360 does end up eventually supporting HD-DVD, it is unlikely that actual games would be released on the format. Microsoft is taking enough flak about their backwards compatibility issues without wanting to deal with it within one generation.
Xbox 360 May or May Not Use HD-DVD
[xbox] - Despite reports a few weeks ago that Marlon Brando's voice work for the upcoming The Godfather game was unusable, it appears that at least some of the material recorded last February will make it into the game. Due to health problems, the acclaimed actor, who passed away five months after the recording session, had to deliver his lines while using breathing apparatus, which marred the recordings. Though EA confirmed that Brando's voice will be in the game, a representative also stated that some dialogue will be filled in by an impersonator.
Brando Still the Godfather
[ps2] [xbox] [psp] - 360 is getting a remake of the first game in the big-in-Japan Tengai Makyo (Far East of Eden to us) RPG series, originally on PC Engine/TurboGrafx CD. The game retains the original's characters but adds an entirely new story element. Also, you know, new graphics and stuff.
Tengai Makyo Goes West
[xbox] - The first Square Enix Party happened this weekend, and with it a whole bevy of Square Enix-related news items. Here are some highlights: Due to health problems, Final Fantasy XII executive producer Yasumi Matsuno is relinquishing producer duty to Akitoshi Kawazu of the SaGa series. However, Matsuno is remaining on board in supervisor capacity. Final Fantasy XII has been confirmed for a March 16 release date. Apparently the game is almost complete, including the localization, but Square Enix apparently wants to distance the game chronologically from Kingdom Hearts II, which also received a general release period of Winter 2005. The first hands-on demo of Final Fantasy XI on Xbox 360 will be playable at Leipzig, Germany's Games Convention from August 17-21. Many trailers were shown, beginning with the aforementioned Final Fantasy VII "tech demo". Videos were also shown from games such as the mobile-only Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, PS2's Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, PSP's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, the film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. So yeah, Square still likes FF7. Trailers for Kingdom Hearts II, Final Fantasy XII and Front Mission 5 were also present.

"The game is just one step away from completion, so please look forward to it. We are confident that we will deliver a Final Fantasy beyond everybody's imagination on March 16."
Finally some solid info on a release date and the status of the game. Oh, and that "a FF game beyond everybody's imaginiation" comment is very... reassuring somehow.

I know Nintendo has major street cred and all, I own all nintendo consoles (including the Virtual Boy which I bought on launch) - but the little voice in the back of my head says Im going to be dissappointed.

I'm playing Chrono Trigger for the first time (Final Fantasy Chronicles) and I realized that it's just a story, a linear one at that, that gets filled in by the player with battle sequences. The linear nature of the game results in not being able to tackle a situation any number of ways. Gameplay consists of moving through an area, fighting all the monsters in that area, get a key item, go back through the area, fight boss, enter next area, rinse, repeat.
Same thing with FFX. I got to the wedding and stopped playing because I just wasn't having fun. I'd rather just watch a movie of the game rather than finish playing it. Kinda like reading a book that sucks for 10th grade English class and choosing instead to watch the movie so you can pass the test. And it's sad when you feel that way about a video game.

Great, it'll be like the Crying Game -- when you unwrap it out of the box, you'll discover it has a big dong.

Facade is a really cool idea, and it looks like they put alot of thought into it, but the text parser sucks ass. They will talk about stuff, and if you say anything just slightly off topic, they get totally confused. The only way they can actually understand you is if they ask you a question directly and you keep your answer short. Otherwise they just go along with the script like you never said a thing. And the script is pretty shitty too. And the second you try to make things interesting by hitting on the chick, or cussing, they just kick you out.
Yes, I know it's freeware and it's an experimental project, but with the hype that Chris and that game developer dude were giving it, I was disappointed.

If it's the same game, same story, but with enhanced graphics, how is that any better? Why can't Square-enix have the balls to produce a game on par with FF7 - a game with modern technology that uses a unique art direction and story that makes you want to play it. It's as if they're afraid to invent - to develop something new - they're just going to cling to this license. I can name all the other FF7 content on the way in support of this desperate cling they've got going on.
I have no doubt the content will be 'good' - but hell, in a way it tarnishes the memory of the original. Just look at MGS: Twin Snakes on the cube. Awesome game in it's own right, but was it possible for anyone who played the original to not compare this game to it (and likely remember enjoying it more the first time)?
FFX was good on it's own merits, but you can't tell me that FFX, FFXI, (and dear god definitely not FFX-2) were developed with the same level of initiative and inspiriation that went into 7.
I want a fun RPG with an intriguing story line, characters that aren't increasingly metrosexual, and modern technology as their canvas to paint it.
I know I sound like a ranting fanboy. But I'd rather be a fanboy that demands innovation and effort instead of one that blindly praises everything that SE puts out.

Stuff about memory cards (they'll be memory stick duos), hard drive (not for games, for media), but the big stuff is the graphics performance issues.
Hey guess what, 1080p isn't a standard. Most developers are targetting 720p. Also, apparently if you want faster frame rates you'll have to drop the resolution. Awesome, we'll be playing Killzone 2 in stunning 480p. Who knows what the story will be with antialiasing etc.

So will Nintendo donate these "special" machines to the special olympics for recreation between matches of wheelchair wrestling?
Nintendo, I'm not sure how to say this... your execs sound like bumbling kindergarteners. Please hire some good reps or something.

So guys,... the Xbox 360 and Force Feedback / wheels.
Who else is with me in saying not only had this thing better damn well do it (ok it likely will, they aren't totally stupid) but who else would like to see the awesome Logitech Driving Force Pro (150$ US model) supported on the XB360?
It's a monster wheel - has awesome support in GT4 from Logi / Sony and works via USB (so PS2 and PC but no XBox 1 :( )
It's meant to be exceptionally good quality and have REALLY strong force feedback feel to it.
Now,... I will never ever purchase a driving wheel until it supports ALL my gaming machines,.... PC, PS2 AND my Xbox 360, I just can't afford to purchase 2 wheels and to add to that, my apartment isn't large - I don't have room for a cupboard full of gaming devices for each system.
Fingers crossed for a really good wheel to be released for the 360 or the already released wheel to get support (Driving Force Pro in Forza would be sex)
*head asplodes*
what, if anything, wasnt a friggin cutscene at the sony booth?

In the first one I arrived and hear these idiots arguing through the door and immediately turned around and clicked the elevator. Fortunately for me it worked and ended the game -- unfortunately for the game you have to reload the whole thing to play again, so that was the end of it for me.
A couple days later I tried again. I went inside and bee-lined into their kitchen and looked around, then went back to the women and clicked her boobies and mouth. I kissed her apparently, which is good. Then I sat down on the couch and asked her to come sit down next to me over and over but she wouldn't listen damnit!
I minimized the game after that and came back later, but by then it had leaked memory everywhere and crashed.
I'll have to try again some other time to see where I can go with it.
