Powerplay & id

A bit more followup on the story ran yesterday about Powerplay concerning Valve, Cisco, Epic and many others. The official website has now opened up for you to look at. Also, the guys at PlanetFortress have a bit more Q&A on just what is going on and what Valve is after. On top of that, many people were curious aboout the lack of id Software on that list, I fired some email to Gabe and here's his response:

Yahn's been talking with John quite a bit about this.   John told Yahn he wants to take a stab at rewriting the Linux IP stack and a soft modem driver to see how much latency he can remove, and use that to pressure Microsoft into cleaning up the Windows stack.  That would be really useful data to have. Our list of things and John's list of things are pretty much identical, but John passed this time around on being part of the public announcement. Yahn's take was that John was just tired of answering questions from the press...<snip> Certainly with everything John has done already (e.g. OpenGL) he's paid his dues into the next century, so if thinks it's other peoples' turn to carry the flag for a bit, that's totally justified.

  • As one of the last high ping bastards playing Quake, I have to say I dont mind if you have a lower ping, because you payed for the extra edge, and I sure as hell would love to have it if I had the chance.

One thing that I hate is how its normally a lpb guy, most likely cable start bitching hes getting lag because I being a HPB joined a server. I really doubt that I would be affecting just that one guy. Usually my ping/game is pretty good :-)

The only time I do bitch is when the server host is actually playing on his own server, definitely non-winnable...lol...

  • Man,

I really feel sorry for you guys stuck on modems. Up here we have had cable and ADSL (1.5Mb down/0.5 Mb up)service for over 2 years now. I think my teleco now has over 120000 DSL accounts. That is 120000 paying interenet subscriptions - and not including the subscriptions that the cable companies get. Q3 servers in my area are full of LPBs like me. And the competition drives the price down to forty bucks a month. I couldn\'t get a second phone line and a dial up account with unlimited access for that cheap. In this part of the world, dial ups died fast, used mostly now by people who want 10 hour per month access. When the 12-17 year olds that are hooked on games grow up and move out, I\'d bet that net work cards will come standard in computers, not modems.

What happened to competition? How are these bastard telcos and cablecos able to stay in buisness without providing these types of services? Are the lines and switches in problem areas so old that they require replacement, or are your providers just lazy and blind?

  • well I hope that Valve and Cisco can pull this off... because anyone who plays HL online knows it\'s the laggiest game out there. It astounds me how the pings can be so shitty high when it\'s based off the stellar QW code. I am on DSL and while I can ping servers in the 40\'s in Q1,2,3 the lowest ping I can get in HL is a constant 90ms. I rarely if ever see anyone in HL with a 30 ping or so usually it\'s 70\'s and up unless they\'re the server. Now everyone\'s saying who gives a shit 90ms is still good but yah it\'s okay but wtf why can\'t we get 40\'s in HL too? There isn\'t more data being sent around than in Q3 right? I have read about the new net code for TF2 hopefully it will really kick ass.

Before I got DSL I played HL on a modem and I mean it was fucking horrific, 300ms felt like a Q3 600ms. You couldn\'t move, firing sucked, etc. it was just bad and I was never able to attain a ping under 300 in HL either.

Anyway, what\'s my point, uhm oh yeah, will this Powerplay make pings as good as QW,Q2,Q3 does for free?

  • #47 - you hit on the key points of why it should be given at least a chance without immediately trashing the idea.

Also... with the growing trend of net entertainment, its going to in most ISPs best interest to adopt some type of network policy (PowerPlay or whatever competition develops out of it... isn\'t that always the case? heh) without raising rates, since theoretically they\'ll make more money anyway due to more users...

Two highly incorrect assumptions that people are making are that the net market is becoming saturated, and that high speed net access is becoming the standard. There is still a huge segment of the population, not to mention everyone on aol :), who needs to get a real ISP, and high speed access is far from being ubiquitous although hopefully this will change.

    tas.

  • People crack me up. You do not have to believe in Power Play on faith. When it comes out you can try it free for 30 days with a free copy of Team Fortress (with power play code). I plan to try it. I have nothing to lose.
I live in an area with no cable or DSL service. I am so sick of lag it is not funny. I know many people in my area that quit playing online FPSs only because of this. I will give Power Play the benefit of the doubt. If it does not work I am out nothing.
As far as Power Play being as service and not a technology. It is both. The service is an ISP that supports Power Play (the technology). The plan is to encourage all major ISPs to adopt Power Play technology over time. Who is saying that it will cost $10 more a month? They have not released any pricing policies, and in the end it will be up to individual ISPs as to how much they will charge. I am not saying that it will not be more, but it is too early to tell.
It is to the benefit of the whole gaming and game developing community to bring 56K players up to speed. I hope it can be done. I know I need it for TF2, and Tribes 2. Just think how great a level playing field would be! I know I am hoping Valve and Cisco can pull it off.
Then there was the guy who said Power Play sounds like Divx? How do you figure? I do not see any similarities. You need to do some research. Do you even know what Divx was? If you do you must not know what Power Play is, because there are no similarities.
All I can say is that I am hopeful.

  • #36 Sorry misread. Yes I too got better pings on QW but nowadays with the busy internet and the more routers out their means most likely your packet are geting routed all over the place resulting in many more hops plus the traffic slows things down even more back then it was a little different. Anyway the fact that you can get a better ping with Linux or Win2k show the flaw in the Win9x TCP/IP stack. Again Carmack thinks so too. Well this powerplay what ISP and how much extra is it going to cost and will it be required to play games. I would rather just wait for cable to be available in my area. (I am too far for DSL :( )

  • I\'ve never gotten a ping below 180ms. And that was at 4 am on a local server (4 miles from here) and I was the only one on the server.

I usually get a 350ms ping. I\'m gonna get DSL as soon as Southwestern Bell decides it\'d be a good idea TO FUCKING EXPAND. That\'d be paying $10 more a month... for a ping of around 60ms. For now, Powerplay sounds good, but for the cost of my ISP and Powerplay I could get DSL (if it were available here), with a waaay better ping. Had this service been around 6 months or earlier ago, I\'d be all over it. But for now, I\'m gonna wait.

  • Wonder if it is a phase people get to.

I just got my cable modem a couple of weeks ago (just became available here) and am loving it. Compared to what I am still used to, I can\'t see any difference between 10ms and 30ms and still am pleased when some HPB gets near the top of the scores.

One other weird thing that I have noticed, though... On several occasions I\'ve seen people moving and firing a bit faster than everyone else, like they had Haste, but with no smoke trail and on levels without the powerup. Any possibility that there is a new time hack? At least one of these was on a so-called \"pure\" server too.

  • Imanez, it\'s hard to believe they can blame it on your ping since I have yet to ever join a game and be the ONLY lpb there. In fact on q3a especially, its usually all lpb\'s and a couple modem guys. Even QW has reached the point of equal or more lpb\'s in a game now compared to modemers. I dont see it in H-L or tribes near as much but most hardcore quakers that have fast acces available, get it. And as for q3a, since its a new game that requires the fastest and latest ech to run it well, I would expect those same comp owners to also have the latest tech in net access.
