New Halo Shots

by Steve Gibson, Jan 07, 2000 8:38pm PST

Bungie was showing off that oh so incredible Halo game once again. GameSpot slapped up 3 new images of the game which are looking smooth as always. Here are all the rest of the images. I would like this game now, thanks. Oh, and ditch that 3rd person stuff.

  • Yeah that is all I need

To have my camera hitched on a wall somewhere while someone is ripping me apart with a turret mounted machine gun on a jeep.

If there is a lot of person based combat, I think excluding a first person view would be a major mistake. Personally I find third person view hasn\'t offered the accuracy or personal control that I have with a first person view. Position, direction and aiming are just easier, because they all stem from the same vantage point. In first person, where your reticle is aimed is where you are facing, the center of any circle strafing, and the target of all your weapons. Also turning seems much faster, since you don\'t have to rotate your camera around a point 20 feet infront of you.

That being said, sometimes the extra fov from third person can save a lot of looking around. I guess it depends on wether Halo is more an FPS or more an RTS. Hopefully they will provide the option to play in either third or first person. Either way I think I will own a copy 8).

  • The pointless debate right now (at least how i see it) is that whether the selection of 3rd person mode for Halo will turn to be a mistake or not.

Pointless to be sure. I hate myself for not keeping my trap shut during these kinds of threads, but dammit, its the shack and Im apparently powerless to resist.

To summarize my beef is with people who immediately write the game off due to:

    a) it not being or playing like a fps when it was never intended to be fps (and I understand and can accept your point midshift - thats cool then)

    b) poor control in previous 3rd person games (action or otherwise) means that Halo\'s controls are going to suck by default. Never mind that we havent seen/tried them out, thats irrelevant... =P

Hey, Halo might suck - no problem (though I\'ll be the first to admit I\'d be pretty disappointed). But to write it off at this point, to even unequivicolly say it wont be as good as it *could* be, for the above reasons, well thats just plain dumb.

Huh ? No one said that..
What \"I\" said was that i havent found ANY 3rd person games that had controls as nice and fluid as a typical FPS. Mech3 has been the only exception, but that\'s slow paced, and i really really doubt that Halo is going to be like that. The pointless debate right now (at least how i see it) is that whether the selection of 3rd person mode for Halo will turn to be a mistake or not.

Unlike you some people won\'t be glazed over by the graphics and proclaim Halo to be the second coming, even if it has controls as bad as Drakan.

Thats a better one, eh ? Or is it ? ;)

  • 28 -- If by \"right\" you mean \"like an FPS,\" that\'s probably true. Not all games are or should be FPS games, and a lot of Heretic 2\'s environments, controls, and weapons would\'ve needed to be different for first-person to work decently. It\'s easy to say \"They should add pole vaulting to an FPS!\" but making that actually work and make sense as something different from a jump just doesn\'t seem too plausible.

Games that aren\'t first-person shooters shouldn\'t be judged like one, whether it\'s an RTS, scrolling platformer, or something with more similarities like these chase camera action/adventure games.

3 -- That\'s the art you\'re looking at man, don\'t confuse the two.
