Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jul 20, 2005 7:05pm PDTSo late tonight I'll be sending out an email with a few questions to all the LNC guys who made it through the first pass. If you dont get an email chances are Maarten hated you and what you had to say. He's mean. I on the other hand wanted to hire everyone. I'm full of happiness and rainbows and care bears.
- Foundations of fibbing - Porn email is naughty - Slot machine with your ATM - Perhaps dont call a radio station about a crime you did - Some info on that asteroid impactLastly, RIP James :(
Carmageddon ploughing into GOG
Harry Potter for Kinect announced
Mad Riders trailer goes heavy on the meta
Anarchy Reigns finished, delayed by Sega anyway
Jet Set Radio making its way to Vita
Fucking JCB's. :)
- O.P.
So far, I've set up a RAID1 array for no-brainer backups, installed/fully patched windows xp pro (left firewall on and automated updates on DL + install), and installed/fully patched office. Any recommendations on other programs to install/things to set up for stability and security (again, for someone who doesn't know what they're doing when it comes to this stuff - so all needs to be essentially automated etc.). I'm thinking I'll get Firefox on there and set it up nicely (and hide IE) but not sure what else.

This week there was a competition on gametrailers.com forums to take the best scenes from the Metal Gear Solid Trilogy and splice them together to create a tribute. There were a few participants, but here are two of the best ones I've seen so far imo..
There is a slow build-up through the first half of this trailer, but I think the last half really sums up the whole series. I've heard the music in the trailer used with other film trailers before.. but don't know the name of it. :( Sounds a little like Craig Armstrong's stuff..

Damn it.. the guy below knows how to edit. I'm not sure if he does professional stuff, but his transition timing is great. I especially loved the Revolver Ocelot part. Konami, give that character a Western style game, I beg you!

The Official QuakeCon Wallpaper Contest
Basically we need some of you non-artistically-challenged dudes to come up with a desktop background that will become this year's official wallpaper. For those who have never been to QuakeCon, this wallpaper ends up EVERYWHERE and thus brings fortune and glory to the artist. And the chicks dig it.
QuakeCon and id Software have promised to get a prize to the winner, as well... tho we're not quite sure what that will be yet.
Read all about it here:

I mean...I *tried* to explain that IE made the whole computer vulnerable, and that it was totally not secure, and the pop-up blocker thing totally sucks, but she...she just was like: "IT'S NOT BROKEN. IT WORKS."
I'm like: "I bet your computer at home is slowing down, and it's filled with spyware."
"Well...well, I don't notice it much. I just use it for e-mail and music."
What. the. fuck. This is an intelligent girl, it obviously *is* broken. It takes 5 minutes to switch over. WHAT DON'T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND?!?!?!

(big spoilers) I've actually been saying that Dumbledore has to die since I finished the last book. His presence erased the dramatic tension; he has served too much as a Deus Ex Machina, a Superman figure who is simply too strong. Killing him off is the only way I felt Rowling would be able to have an actual dramatic arc in the end. I also am happy to say that I predicted both Snape's killing of Dumbledore and Snape's identification as the Half-Blood Prince earlier on in the book. Since I seem to have been good at guessing the plot twists, mark my words: Snape is not a fully evil figure, completely on Voldemort's side. He has twists yet to be revealed.

I know this link has been posted a while ago, BUT maybe you didn't know yet:
- this keyboard is already in production and will be on shelves in 2006. Price will be about 200-300$ (if warranty is ~4 years, I'll buy one)
- they're currently looking for some oem partners too, so maybe it'll be available for less
- this is the only keyboard featuring the "any key". No more dump phone calls ("which key is the any key")

So, I'll give you my requirements and you tell me:
1) I will be using it to type notes on in class. Law school specifically, of which I've been told that taking notes by hand is hell when it's time to condense and reorganize at the end of the year. While I got away with using paper and pens in undergrad, the format of law classes makes a laptop immensly useful.
2) I will have a desktop machine, this will not be my only computer. I also plan on buying a 19" LCD at some point, so i will be able to plug the laptop in. However, I don't know anything about 'native resolutions',so will i run into problems if i get a smaller notebook with a crappier graphics card that might not allow output at the 19" native resolutiion?
3) I am open to the idea of buying a powerbook, but the imminent switch to intel makes me slightly weary.

I wonder why still so many people are into C/C++.
- High level languages like Java/C# are performance-wise almost on the same level, if you don't do some high end stuff. Especially with some cool stuff like JIT and Java HotSpot.
- The garbace collector from C#/Java helps you to avoid memory leaks. In fact, it's almost impossible to avoid them in bigger projects ("which method owns the latest pointer?"), especially for beginners.
- Creating GUIs is much more easy, especially with C# and Studio .NET.
- Better support, especially for beginners, because these languages are used at the most universities.
- ...

Some sites are loading fine (inc. Yahoo and MSN), others - Google UK especially (won't load at all), BBC News (won't load any pictures), etc are completely falling over.
The sites that won't work were working just fine a mere half an hour ago on another computer attached to the same router and going out via the same Internet connection. That leads me to conclude that this computer is at fault. I've done a full spyware check (AdAware and MS) and am running Firefox 1.06 on WinXP

No, just kidding. The development roadmap has been updated (see http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/roadmap.html ) with a release of Firefox 1.5 beta slated for August with the final shebang released sometime this year.
Why the drop of 1.1, is it gone? No, not at all. It's just the Mozilla team has decided to shift up versions to reflect the sheer amount of bug fixes and features worked into the new Deer Park Alphas, some of which you guys are currently enjoying. What does this mean? Nothing much, just that Firefox development is ahead of schedule and we'll have 1.5 as opposed to 1.1.

A few things you might look for to spot its just a recreation ...
- notice how there are no good shots of the mauling but plenty of nice shots of the kids and women crying?
- why is everyone just standing around watching the attack instead of doing something? Notice how they don't try to use the vehicles to get the lions to back off?
- Africa is more gun crazy that America! If the lions were that close they would've been shot.
- the plastic leg sticking up in the air at the end.
