42Fantastic Four opens here tomorrow, and I'm undecided if I'll be seeing this. Most of the reviews have been horrid, but it seems there have been plenty of people who enjoyed it. I've just bought an Inspiron 6000 Laptop and I'm not sure if there is a problem with the LCD (since this is my first one I don't know if this is normal).
Basically, the lower left part of the screen is very bright with the top right are being quite a bit darker. There's a sort of arch on the top half of the screen where above it, everything is darker.
Could this be due to viewing angle? The difference in brightness seems to remain at whatever angle I look at the screen.
What else could it be?

If so, what tuner software are you using? Do you have Windows MCE 2005? Impressions?
I'm using Media Portal right now and it seems to do the job. However, I really miss the functionality of the ATI MMC application.

So I have had my Inspiron 8600 for a few years and I really enjoy it but I have begun to notice my system being seriously left in the dust by newer increasingl y graphically intensive games.
Therefore I have decided to buy OR build a new computer and that is the decision I need help in making. I am not really up on the positive or negative aspects of either option and any advice the shack community can give would be appreciated.

Details: my computer has been hardlocking and sometimes rebooting itself in the mornings. Haven't seen it happen in the afternoons or late nights, but before lunch it can happen every hour, or even rapidly just a few minutes apart. It stopped for about a week, but now the problem has come back.
Without any other specific indications, I would suspect a heat issue, but MBM logs tell me the processor and case temperature are never getting over 52 C. Then again, I don't have a reading on the video card temperature.
I kinda doubt the vid card is the cause of the crashes since it doesn't happen when I play 3D-intensive games, and I'd expect vid card problems to give me weird display artifacts instead of a total crash. But still, I don't have any other ideas and I don't know what the video card's temperature is getting up to.
Could the video card overheating be the cause of the problem? Anyone have any other suggestions?
Oh yeah, specs: Windows XP Pro on an Athlon 3300+, 6800 GT video card, 2 GB RAM, NForce motherboard, and 2 SATA hard disks in a RAID array, running off of a 430 watt Antec power supply.

We keep talking about having a shackmeet, but nothing pans out. I know Caboose and I want to get this going. It seems like a lot of us are interested in just hitting up Navy Pier, but we're open to suggestions. I figure its still earlier in the day, and its worth seeing who's all interested. Either reply here or Shackmessage me and let me know. Within the next week, Caboose and I will have something more concrete planned out to try and get you guys going :)

Im working security at the event, got to roam the floor last night, exhibitors were still setting up as the show doesnt open till thursday to the public.
Awesome booths worth mentioning
Activision: fuckin wow! huge banners for Xmen Legends 2 & Ultimate Spiderman, its appears that both will be playable on the floor, really excited to check that out tomorrow.
Sony: nice setup, they got a fuckton of PSPs + slim ps2s connected to big screen hdtvs to demo who knows what.
Square: Massive banners for Advent children and kingdom hearts 2, the booth was still really under construction.
Nintendo: a fuckton of DSs and gamecubes kiosks showing off a bunch of first party stuff, no suprises really.
Microsoft: didnt see a booth, I could be wrong though as the floor was under heavy construction last night.
Thats mostly the video game related stuff that interested me.

The whole anti-gravity-plane-shooter thing hasn't really been done to death, why not make another iteration of the game? I owned and loved all of the 3 previous ones. With new tech and some hard thought, that could be a totally kickass game.

This one's about helos. Big surprise, I know.
After successfully rigging up an interim cooling solution for my dead-fan 9700 ( http://dslyecxi.com/images/random/rigged_fan.JPG ) I went ahead and played some BF2 on local Japanese servers. Of course my masochistic self decided that flying the helo would be a good idea, and over the course of an hour or two I saw most of the spectrum of pub-server helo shennanigans.
Helo Pet Peeves
1) Bad pilots using a joystick. Please, for the love of god, if you aren't UBER with the joystick, don't use it. Helos are, in my and many many other people's opinions, meant to be mouse/keyboard controlled. Nothing makes a gunner sicker faster than a bad joystick pilot. Hey look we're rolling left! Oh noes, he overshot, we're rolling right! Oh wait, overcompensated again, back to the left! The right! The left! OH SHI MOUNTAIN!
2) Improper TV-Guided Missile Usage. Never, ever, ever use the guided missiles against troops, ever. I'd rather have my gunner parachute out and try to knife a squad of enemy infantry to death than try to hit them with missiles. The cannons are awesome, use them. Havoc > all when it comes to cannons, but the others are still good, and they're perfect anti-infantry weapons. Along the same lines, don't shoot at tanks with the cannon. You're only going to alert him to our presence, which makes it more difficult for a painless TV-missile shot to happen. Expect most pilots to do rocket attacks on vehicles once they see you start trying to kill tanks with the cannon. Proper cannon/missile usage inspires confidence in the pilot and allows him to alter his flight profile accordingly to give the gunner the best chance at slaughtering things.
3) Generally Shitty Gunners. Gunners make or break the helo in regards to lethality. As a pilot, I really don't want to have to do much with the rockets - I want to save my rockets for squad-sized masses of infantry or the occasional vehicle, but ideally my gunner is doing all the killing. If as a gunner you can do your job effectively, you'll give your pilot the confidence to provide a stable gun platform and keep a keener watch for anti-air threats and targets of opportunity. I'm not going to float around the battlefield if my gunner can't kill things with speed and efficiency, I'll stick to slashing attacks with rockets if that's the case. Please, please, please don't jump in as a gunner if you don't know how to effectively gun. =(
On the flip side, for the love of fuck, give your gunners a shot. Any helo pilot that does NOTHING but strafe with rockets is wasting the helo. If your gunner never has a shot, you're only utilizing 30% or so of your helo's capabilities.
4) Communication. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PILOT. Tell us when you want to make a missile shot and we'll do what we can to make it happen. Granted, most of my issues with this are due to playing on servers where everyone's speaking a language other than mine, but somehow I get the feeling that it's not much different on US servers.
5) Spotting. Please try to spot any targets you see, this makes it easier for a pilot to know what his gunner wants a shot on. This is particularly useful with armor and other helos... armor, so that we can align for a missile shot, and helos, so in a helo duel the pilot can see where the other helo's oriented when he's out of his FOV. If you can't use voicecomm, at the very least use the spotting feature.
6) Never bail. If you're my gunner, I expect you to gun with me till death do us part. If you absolutely must go do something else, ALERT ME so that I can drop you off and pick up a new gunner. The game doesn't give any real feedback if you bail (when using the HUD-only view), so I might end up setting up a TV missile shot only to find that hey, my gunner is no longer with me. Not cool.
7) Proper flight profile. As a pilot, do everything in your power to let the terrain work for you. Mask AA positions with terrain, use it to cover your approach, and always stay as low as you possibly can to minimize the number of threats that have a shot on you at any given time. There's a risk at staying low, as AT gunners have a better chance at hitting you like this, but this can be offset by knowing where the enemy infantry are, keeping your nose pointed at them, and changing your direction of movement every few seconds. Slip left, jump up, slip right, drop down, etc. The pauses between each movement allow your gunner the best chance at doing accurate fire.
There's more to be said, but I'll leave it at that for now.. if anyone else has tips for aspiring helo pilots/gunners, feel free to chime in. I'd love to see tons of skilled gunners in all our BF2 Shackbattles. We have a bunch now, but more = merrier.
OH YEAH. Not helo-related, but very serious. NEVER EVER EVER ABANDON A TANK, EVER, EVER, EVER. EVER. Unless you're in friendly territory, I mean. Some moron MEC guy rolled a tank into our area on Mashtuur City and promptly left it unguarded, at which point I jumped into it and proceeded to rape the MEC team for many long, bloody minutes. DON'T LET IT HAPPEN TO YOU.

So I've just started playing Doom 3 OSX and NOLF 2 OSX on my iBook G4. Doom 3 has been tweaked like hell so that my 800MHz PowerPC G4 can handle it. What a bore-fest so far. It's like Half-Life.
NOLF 2, on the other hand, seems like it's an improvement from the original which I loved.
Anybody played Close Combat: First to Fight yet? OSX doesn't have a lot of selection for FPS games, or even games in general.
