Q3 Point Release BETA

Related Topics – beta, Quake 3 Arena

Popping this to the top of the page... Hey guys, just found my way home. Not sure where Maarten has gone, things should be returning to normal around here through the weekend though. Looks like I made it home just in time, rumors have been flying around that the Quake3 point release could be released as early as today. In fact I just got this email from Graeme Devine, as well as a list of changes for the patch.

We've decided to make the point release beta, but public, because there's nothing like a few million beta testers!  When running servers using this release we highly suggest running them as non-pure servers so that older clients can connect to them without problems.  Please read the enclosed FAQ for a detailed list of which bugs and UI features we've addressed with this point release.  If all goes well we'll go with a final version of the point release very soon.  The Macintosh and Linux builds of the point release BETA will be out hopefully today as well. -Graeme Devine
The file is just over a meg, you can grab it here. Be sure to list off some mirrors in the comments since I'm sure things will get choked up here fairly quickly Here are some mirrors: PlanetQuake , OxygenTank A couple other things you may wish to check out. The Q3FAQ which was included in the patch, the .plan update from Graeme Devine listing off several of the changes, and of course the Quake3 messageboard. Also, I added a few items to 'views' a little while ago.

  • Ok. I have always enjoyed their games immensely, but it\'s minor things like this that annoy me. Why release a point release as a /beta/? Why not run through your bugtesting all of the way to ensure that you don\'t force intrepid modem users to download version after version?

Have you ever tried to get people at a LAN party, some of whom are not the biggest quake fans, to install a) a beta point release on top of their copies of quake 3, b) a patch to bring that beta point release up to the final point release, and possibly even c) a patch to correct bugs in the post-beta-final point-release?

Since most likely the beta point release and the final point release will not be compatible, trying to get a version of quake 3 up and running could soon get to be as challenging as half-life (\"Hey, what version do you have? I have 1.0.0.3\" - \"I have 1.0.1.0, but I think the server is running 1.0.1.3\" - \"Ahh fuck it, I want to play Diablo\")

Or how about an auto-update function in the game? Like a tiny button that\'ll pop up on the main menu when there\'s a new version available? Not forcing anyone to upgrade, but letting them know that the option is there.

    Please id, keep it simple.

  • #188 - I can accept that. I just wish everyone would take it as lightly as you are. Thank you. So far it seems just like me, you, and LoCoBaStArD are taking this for what it\'s worth, while level-headed.

And if it fuckin\' matters to anyone, I\'ve apologized on my site.

But don\'t go there if you don\'t think I, or the other webmaster there (who deserves none of this bad association that\'s going along with it all) deserve the *gasp* $0.03 that we get (and split) from you visiting, then don\'t go.

I think you all know the URL now, *laff*

  • #183 - That\'s... different than what everyone else seems to be doing.

If you were trying to imitate me, you\'re waaay off. And if you\'re making fun of the morons who are amused by posting a link to my page (which can only help me), then, well...

    (A) Don\'t stoop to their intellectual level.
    ...or...
    (B) Keep going. You\'re choice. :)

And before you people start putting words into my mouth by saying that I think just because you don\'t like my site, you\'re intellectually lower than me, that\'s wrong. If you\'re constantly posting the URL which everyone has probably been to by now, that\'s lower than I\'d go (intellectually of course, spamming is pretty low :] ).
