Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jul 11, 2005 6:22pm PDTSo very hungry all day today.. Guess I'm catching up for eating barely nothing the past few days. I'm still a not so incredible 185lbs no matter what my diet or exercise is though. I'm sure I'll miss those days in a few years. In the mean time it's time for another burger!

I haven't seen that much discussion on it. It looks like we have finally talked BF:2 into the ground as well as War of the Worlds while I was gone so thats good I guess.

Hey, I finally had time to add the game settings edit dialog! The "Add"/"Edit" buttons now open a dialog to edit the current selection rather than having to do it manually. You still have to add passwords manually, though (haven't added a dialog for that yet). "File->Register" registers the "slod://" protocol with Windows.
For those who don't know what this is, it's a program to let you launch multiplayer games from within your favourite browser. You know, like Unreal and the "unreal://" protocol.
For the security minded, the browser has no control over the program and the settings in the ini file, only you can modify that. The user is always prompted before the game is launched with the EXE listed so you can see what is being run. Passwords are not supported in the URL (to protect all those password protected servers), but they are supported on a per-server basis in the ini file (so you can fill in passwords for your favourite servers to be used automatically).
http://timmie.squabble.org/ssslod/ssslod.zip (exe and sample ini file)
http://timmie.squabble.org/ssslod/ssslod_src.zip (source code)
http://timmie.squabble.org/ssslod/test.html (sample html file for hyperlinking)
And now that BF2 supports command line joining (haha, I don't know the command line syntax for BF2 though) it can serve the purpose it was made for!

Turn up the sound, dim the lights and watch!
Quite awe-inspiring and a great example of fantastic camera work, editing, sound design and overall visualization.
I'd love to create something like that...

You know what I don't understand? Why people willingly watch things that scare them, like scary movies (The Ring) and that rubberjohnny thing. I guess I just don't like being scared, ever. The Ring scared the bejesus out of me, I turned all the lights on in the house and didn't sleep right for days. And kaibosh checking out that hum. That's just freaky, I'd never want to actively seek something like that out.
People who like scary shit: why?
Love,

First of all, the computer reset by itself while I was playing a video... then wouldn't boot properly... then it wouldn't boot at all and finally I wasn't even able to shut it down without cutting the power.
My initial thought was an overheated videocard... so I checked the fan, which worked and despite that installed a new one. It still wouldn't boot.
I replaced the memory. It still wouldn't boot. I disconnected all the drives... and it still wouldn't even get to bios 99% of the time.
I found it strange that sometimes it would get passed the video card recognition screen... sometimes it would find the cpu... sometimes it verified the ram and sometimes it even managed to go to bios... once it even started up windows... but at that point it crashed... if it didn't before.
All fans are working perfectly so it's not a heat issue... it's not the memory, not the drives and not the videocard. What's left is the PSU, the mainboard and the CPU.
With the bootup always behaving differently I just pressed reset again and again for a solid 5 minutes after putting everything back together... now I'm back in windows and the system has run stable for about half an hour.
I find this really strange. What else can I do to find out what's going on here?

Associated Press reports that Korea's Doosan Bears pitcher Park Myung-hwan was caught keeping frozen cabbage under his cap. He explains that he was trying to keep cool, but the Korea Baseball Organization issued ruling in a statement that said "wearing cabbage leaves inside a baseball cap constitutes an 'alien material' that may disrupt a game."
Now koreans are cabbage-doping :(

After dinner local reps ask "Have you ever tried Durian?". I reply yes, (I have tried it, but not served just fresh out of the shell). As it works out, we go and try Durian fruit.
What is Durian fruit you may ask?
To start with it looks like this: http://www.chat11.com/Picture_Gallery/plants/fruits/durian/durian08.jpg
The smell and texture and taste? http://www.chat11.com/Durian_Fruit
"Tastes like Heaven, smells like hell. and 'bowel breath for hours' are particular phrases that ring true.
My opinion. We tried both the bitter and sweet type of durian (there are over 50 different types of durian). Bitter was slightly better tasting. The texture of this stuff is like just warming up butter (you squeeze its very soft). The smell (well lets just say its not too pleasant).
That being said, when all was said and done, I'd eaten an entire fruit (imagine a giant orange with slices with the meat in it).
I give it two thumbs up. (Was very yummy). Anyone else ever try it?

Yes, you saw that right, whilst the X850XT and 6800 Ultra (and SLI) take a MASSIVE dive, the 7800GTX (a singular one even) remains cpu limited in Half Life 2 at 2048x1536 with 4x FSAA and 16x AF
I think I found the new card to have to play CS, at least until R520 shows up :)

It's a 3d schmup for the DS that looks like it'll be a lot of fun. It has things like upgradeable weapons and local wireless coop ability.

One of the cooler things is weapon switching is done by touching the screen instead of having to cycle through your weapon list you simply use your thumb to click the one you want. That's one of the cool things about the touchscreen imo, It doesn't have to be used in games like meteos/kirby but letting developers add extra buttons how they want is pretty cool. Sorta changes the system from having 4 face buttons to 8 with 4 of them being visual.

It's just scary sometimes when you see a news story about something you're already familiar with. You notice how much they get wrong, and you never know if you can trust them on other things, especially important complicated stuff.

107,000 players online playing Halo 2 right now. Thats more then the top 6 PC games (104.669) according to GameSpy*. And its only going to get worse. I'm really starting to fear for my PC gameing. Hopefully XNA is embraced by all.

No idea why really, because they haven't had a gig since making that profile. But have a look if you like acoustic stuff - the songs are still a little rough (It was just my bro until 2 months ago when the other guitarist joined, and the bassist/drummer joined last week or so).
