Battlefield 2 Downgrade Advice
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 09, 2005 10:19am PDTThere's a new community update on the official Battlefield 2 website, acknowledging that the recently released 1.01 patch for the game introduces a memory leak. The team is working on a hotfix for the problem, but in the mean time EA recommends downgrading back to the retail release. Reinstalling will not affect your medals or rankings.

I haven't had the team color bug in a while, not like the demo days. I do see that sometimes teammates' names take longer to show than it should, but I haven't seen blue enemies or red friendlies since this latest install.
To me the single most maddening problem with BF2 is the insane interface/server browser. I can't believe that shit made it out of even the most basic QA.

All hells. It's patching as I type. Somebody shoot me.
Will the memory leaking affect anything if I just don't play the game until the new patch comes out?

Imagine they would go poof. You know how few good games are actually left?
Their publishing power makes a lot of games possible which otherwise were not ever come on the market. Do you really think without manufacturing powerhouses like EA your fucking redneck rural home town would be able to carry 0day games?
Stop trying to look smart by bashing the enemy of the week. You don't have to work for them if you don't want to.

Instead of getting rid of the issues keeping me from buying it they're introducing more!

Do you wonder how such a great game can be so bad? I do, and here's my guess:
DICE has some smart guys working on BF, they know how to make a fun game. They've proven themselves with BF and BF2.
Then you introduce management. Management says "Lets try Flash for the GUI, it'll cut manpower and time!" They also say "Lets sell to EA, they just offered us enough money to buy Sweden!"
So now EA management says "Plan to release BF2 a couple months earlier than planned, ok? Oh and drop this list of features."
EA management says "Time to fire those guys in New York and use a contract loophole to deny them $200,000 USD. Oh and make sure we don't keep them by only offering them jobs in Sweden. What game did they make again? What is Desert Combat?"
And what is the latest mistake? Slowly developing a very minor patch, releasing it flawed, then 'sort of maybe recommending' everyone uninstall and reinstall the game, even though the problem obviously doesn't affect everyone.
Who the fuck recalls a patch when you've got servers full of people out there playing for hours and hours without issue? Seriously, can I possibly imagine a worse management decision then asking a couple hundred thousand gamers to uninstall and reinstall the game because you think maybe some of them might get a memory leak because you don't know how to test software? No I don't think I can, that's pretty damn bad. I can only guess that nobody in PR knows what is going on, or they don't care, or something.
What should they have done? Try calling everyone at DICE in on the weekend to do and test a 1.02 fix, and then put it through an excessive QA process (that they apparently skipped before) when EA USA wakes up on monday, that's what.
Jesus Christ, EA is breaking all the rules of civilized software development here. Talk about taking the industry back 25 steps in one title, holy shit.

It would be nice if they fixed it so when you dont accidently TK someone at the beginning of the round (like when MORONS run in front of your tank) you don't suddenly have -213124u35734953495 on your score

squads + teamwork + voip = fun to the max
If it is that obvious, why did they release it ?
It seems like it leaks when loading levels.
After loading 3-4 different levels on my 1gig mem machine, it choked!
I had to quit because the game became unplayable.
Memory leaks are hard to debug, but if they did everything right, they wouldn't be into this problem. Like having reference counting, smart pointers etc.
It feels like BF2 is kinda rushed out if you ask me.
I mean, the player tag display is a VERY obvious bug. I guess they don't know what causes it, maybe they got lost in code?
I can't imagine that BF2 is rewritten, it seems like it is all patched up ( like adding engine features etc ).
I can't even begin to imagine how much hacks and inconsistencies it must be in that engine!
If you rush out a product that is built (literally) on an existing framework that was not intended to support feature x y z, you are asking for trouble.
Find this song: Darin - Money for nothing
Play it and imagine EA employees singing it every morning like some mantra.
Made me laugh anyway =)
The video cards supported list only the PCI-E version of the 6600gt but I'd heard it was running just fine on the AGP, but now I'm curious...
Am I gonna have to upgrade again for this game? So far this game has cost me about $300...

Please test your shit before releasing it. I don't like to buy games until they are finished (or at least close to finished). I will continue to wait.

you all seem to forget the issues that 1942 was riddled with at release and it turned out great... I am having a good time with the game despite its flaws and am sure that it will be even better in a couple of patches...

Now they want me to reinstall it to ditch the patch?
Jesus.
P.S. This note has been on EA's site for a few days now, but I think most people thought it only applied to server admins.
I don't know if it's DICE's fault or EA's fault but it makes me really sad. In the patch, they don't even address some of the major bugs. I'm wondering how long it's going to take them to patch it to a level that is bug-free for most people.
