Supreme Commander Interview
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 09, 2005 10:17am PDTGameSpy has more Supreme Commander coverage, talking to Chris Taylor of Gas Powered Games about this new strategy game. Chris talks about Total Annihilation 2, the things that make Supreme Commander unique, the campaign, art style, resources, the world view and more.
GameSpy: In a recent magazine article, you mentioned a new feature where the computer would register panic or multiple clicks on a particular unit and take that into account when determining attacks. Can you go into more detail about that? Taylor: I'll give you an easy example. Imagine that you have a group of tanks and are approaching an opponent's base. If you have them all selected and issue an attack order in a traditional game, they will all attack the specified target, but this is not very desirableâ?¦ as what you really want is a unilateral attack across the entire base. So, in order to take the command and control aspect of the game to the next level, we have three distinct kinds of attacks, all of which are communicated through the mouse clicks interface. A) One click - attack unilaterally, B) Two clicks - all available units attack a single structure but only fire enough to destroy it, C) Three clicks - It's Gary Oldman in The Professional yelling, "Get me everyone!!!"Additionally GameSpy has articles about the game's land, sea and air battles.

This entire game looks hand-drawn but is clearly 3d.

Tracks in the snow+ very high quality tanks...
I'm sure they wont let us down.
Also, I'm very happy to see terrain scarring.

Said it before and I will say it again Total Annihilation > ( Starcraft * 100)
I played Starcraft for a week and I was burned out on it, just Warcraft 2 in space, old and lame the day it was released.
Sadly just like what happened with Starcraft I don't think this will sell as many units, back in the day people would play Starcraft, be like "LOL I click on teh unit and they say funny stuff LOL thats neet, lol its like aliens and stuff" and that was enough to make them enjoy it more than the FAR superior gameplay of TA.
From the screenshots it doesn't look like the units will have much personality and that is what people want over a good game.

Hopefully though this does seem to be bringing a different gameplay feel to the table, just like TA did when it came out.

Super Mega units? You mean like the ones Dawn of War / Battle For Middle Earth / War of the Rings had?
How exactly is the game going to introduce more strategy? Specifics, please.
Not trying to put the game down, as it could be brilliant (TA was), but that was not a good interview if you were looking for what makes the game cool and different.

This mouse-click enhancement is a bigger benefit that you might realize until you fire up a classic RTS like C&C:Generals, Warcraft2/Starcraft, or the original TA, in any of which you should be able to notice how this will be a transparent benefit.

*w00t @ co-op through the sp campaign(s)?! SWEEET! <3 Chris Taylor <3
*w00t @ the return of the Commander unit (albeit in Super form)
*w00t @ super units
*w00t @ it being highly editable and modable
That interview made me want to go dig out my TA CDs and drop that piece back on my harddrive. I still have those discs and another CDR filled with additional maps, units, and whatnot. Mmmm, tempting...

Then again this is TA2 so you know gameplay is going to excel anything we have seen so far....
At first this was a bit disappointing because I was expecting more from the graphics. But when you see how far it can zoom out and how many units it can have it looks amazing and it'll have that same TA feel because it looks so similar.
Can't wait.
