The Future of Windows Gaming
by Alec Matias, Jul 01, 2005 6:38am PDTGameDaily.biz has an informative interview with Microsoft's Chris Donahue, head of the Developer Relations team for Windows Graphics and Gaming Technologies. He talks at great lengths about DirectX, the gaming capabilities of Longhorn, cross-over technology of the PC and Xbox 360, and even comments about ATI vs. nVidia.
Windows gaming is kind of the Energizer bunny of gaming platforms - it just keeps going and going. And it keeps on innovating. With Longhorn, we're looking at how we can eliminate pain points for consumers, while opening up other genres through things like Microsoft's universal gaming controller standard, which will give gamers more choices about how to play games on Windows.A couple other ideas they have to eliminate the "pain points" is to create a new display driver model for improved stability and speeding up the install process. With the Xbox 360 controller being compatible with the PC and Microsoft supporting technology that wouldn't require the installation of a game before getting to play it, it appears Microsoft is trying hard to streamline the entire process.. making the PC function the same way as console.

that eliminates the joy of pc gaming...which is altering and customizing your games. I think thats why duke3d, doom2, half life, etc had so much longevity....
the other changes in store sound really good. Resolving driver fights with video cards, and a universal game controller platform is sorely needed.

They are cutting through the shit and labelling what the REPORTED PROBLEMS are, and seeking ways to fix them.
I really like the term "pain points". It would presumably lead people to actually focus on these, rather than making new icons and folders and other irrelevant design aspects.
Now if we could get tweakers to stop fucking around in their registry and having 400 run time tweaker apps...it would be so awsome to have a game installer program say "The following programs are unnecessary and can be removed. Press OK to uninstall your incorrect methods of being l33t." Tweakers that obtusely blame MS or the game devs or whatever are so embarassing. :( So it seems logical that a joint effort between MS and the devs can alleviate a lot of phantom issues. :D

Developers could simply have an overide directory, so when the game launches it checks in x:\program files\gamename\ for stuff it should use, anything that isnt there gets loaded off the dvd.

Ouch, I found your first pain point... Don't ever say that again...
