First Post!

by Maarten Goldstein, Jun 24, 2005 6:18am PDT

Finally, Battlefield 2 is in my posession. One of the few PC games I've seen selling for e54.99 instead of e49.99 here, EA probably decided they could get away with it for this game. And I guess they can! Only checked out two maps so far, so I don't really have much of a full version impression yet. One thing that was annoying was that GameSpy's account system just would not let me retreive the account I created for the demo (used password reminder and all, and I was trying the right one), so I ended up having to create a new one. Movie: Someone has been pissing on my Gamecube and I'm about to close the case.

  • Killzone has bugs in it. Lots of them have been documented and torn apart, but I think I found a new one:

Check the campaign time.... nearly 70 hours. lolz

so yea, anyway...good $20 FPS held back by having an overly ambitious engine/design, lackluster AI for both teammates and enemies, hit n miss weapon selection, at times overly linear level design, and the classic console checkpoint system. Oh..and the bugs....lord...the bugs...Still managed to have a good bit of fun with it, but that last level was total bullshit.

Really neat storyline (not really original, just neat) and a nice variety of settings. Imagine if someone took elements of WWI (trench warfare), WWII (amphibious assaults), Vietnam (jungle fighting), and then a sprinkle of old fashioned corridor fighting and then slapped it into a nice sci fi setting.

Hopefully Killzone 2 will address the major issues (engine, ai, and bugs), because I'm really looking forward to it now.

  • We just had a Friar Tucks liquor store open here. This place is fucking amazing.

The selection of beers available was just overwhelming. I went with a variety pack this evening. There were actually quite a few I had never heard of, which is really unusual since I sort of fancy myself a beer aficianado (course, I could be totally delusional). Anyway, they had a complete aisle, both sides, the length of a standard grocery store aisle with bottles of beer, plus a cooler in the back with a few that weren't in the aisle.

One side was all domestics, the other side was all imports. What was truly amazing was their selection of single, odd sized bottles. For those who don't know, American beers are fairly standard sized. We have 8, 12, 24, and 40 ounce beers. The rest of the world has a mishmash of various sizes, including some that are metric sized and others that are based on the old imperial standard. At least half of one side of the aisle was dedicated to these world brews.

So, tonight, I picked up the following:

    1. Ruddles County (England) which I have never had before and I am really enjoying. It tastes a bit like Newcastle, but with more bite.
    2. Fuller's 1845 (England) which is a very nice ale, tastes a bit lighter than something like a Pale Ale, but stronger than a bitter.
    3. Harvey's Tom Paine (England) comes highly recommended, but I haven't nipped into it yet.
    4. Paulaner HefeWeizen (Germany) is a damn fine Wheat beer. For those of you who have never had a wheat beer, this is one of the better ones to start with. These are extremely refreshing on a hot day, especially with a slice of lemon.
    5. Czechvar (Czech Republic) is the original Budweiser. Really. It's brewed in the city of České Budějovice, which in German was called Budweis. Adolphus Busch came to the town to check out this new type of beer called a Pilsner, which was brewed in a town called Plzn (Pilsen in German), which is just down the road from Budweis. He had the beer from Budweis (which in German would be Budweiser Bier, that is beer from Budweis). He liked the clearness and bite of it, took the recipe to America and brewed a really bad imitation of it, adding things like corn and rice, things that would make a European brewmaster puke. Needless to say, this beer is awesome. Can't wait to have a drink.
    6. Orval (Belgium) is a trappiste beer. It's brewed in a monastery. Damn those monks know how to make strong beer. You can buy them in a 6 pack, but don't, not if you don't want to go blind. This shit is strong and is the basis for beers like Fin Du Monde, which is a Canadian version of the same thing, but a good bit stronger.

  • Live For Speed 0.5P S2 Alpha is out!

    http://www.liveforspeed.net/

LFS S1 (and S2) is a serious racing simulator. No arcade modes, no steering aids - YOU have to do the driving. It is therefore highly recommended to play the sim with a wheel, because even though you can use keyboard and/or mouse, a wheel is what you use in a real car, so a wheel should be used in a serious racing simulator. Especially when going online, where fast reactions are required.

In S1 and S2 you can race alone or against the AI, but the real fun is to be found online, in multiplayer mode. Racing against real people is simply the best thing and LFS makes it easy for you to do so. There are also several online racing leagues you can take part in, if you are looking for something with a more competitive edge.

A serious simulator obviously requires a very good physics simulation to provide the thrill and fun of real racing. This is done by simulating all aspects that are important to racing. LFS S1 is the first step towards our vision of what the sim must become and already does a very good job in simulating real racing. But as said, S1 is the first step, so it's only logical that there will be a next step: S2.

S2 will significantly improve the simulator; important features have been added. For example dynamic camber (improved simulation of suspension and different suspension types), highly detailed tyre physics and a damage model have been introduced. Also the additional content in S2 should be noted - where S1 mostly contains the 'medium' fast cars and tracks, S2 introduces several 'fast' classes (and 'slow').

In S2 you will also wear your tyres and fuel and as said earlier, you can damage your car, so pitstops have been added to the sim. This, in turn, introduces tactics to LFS racing, making races and especially league races a lot more interesting.

This game is awesome. I just brought an S1 & S2 license so I'm off to race! if you like driving SIMS (not arcade racers) then you should definitely check this out!
