Layoffs At Monolith

While about 25 people will be able to find employment at Sony Online Entertainment following SOE's acquisition of the The Matrix Online and the DC Comics game, some 55 other Monolith employees are out of a job according to the Seattles Times. The layoffs are all part of Monolith exiting the massively multiplayer business. Monolith will still employ over a hundred people, who continue to work on F.E.A.R. and Condemned: Criminal Origins.

Horrible news. I had friends working there, and I interviewed there two years ago for the FEAR project. Seattle has lost a lot of game jobs over the years. Most of the people I knew in Seattle that were developers have now moved to other cities.

They were advertising for MMO jobs as recently as, what, a month or two ago? I wonder if they hired anyone for those positions ... if so, ouch ...

That's sad to hear. I hope they all find jobs in the industry again. Monolith is, I'm guessing, full of talented people that happened to work on a title that just didn't shape up the way they intended. I haven't played the F.E.A.R. demo, but I've only heard good things.
