Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jun 06, 2005 5:53pm PDTBah what a miserable grinding day. I've got a case of the Mondays. :( GTA San Andreas tomorrow though! I havent had nearly enough violence in my gaming lately so that should be fun. I think I'll go for the PC version.
- Virtual PacMan - The Apple to Intel thing is official - New software for hurricanes - WiFi on planes - Microbes dig fine artLastly, we're going to start doing a notification system thingie for the hot releases in the future. For a fun first run we've set up a Battlefield 2 demo notification system. In the future we're hoping to have filters where people can choose particular games / genres etc.
Anarchy Reigns finished, delayed by Sega anyway
Jet Set Radio making its way to Vita
Diablo 3 patch coming next week
Elder Scrolls Online plans to sort out bugs with long beta

Jobs made a strong point in illistrating that the next version of OSX would ship prior to or at least around the same time as long horn.
There are some key questions to ask here.
1. Does Apple see it self in line to compete with Windows Market Share?
2. Could Apple sell OSX stand alone for any x86 PC.
3. By switching to Intel, could this mean the end of propritary solutions from Apple?
4. Would the PC industry as it stands now gain anything from Apple moving to X86?
5. YoY growth of the PC market has stagnating, so why switch?
Thoughts on these questions:
1. I believe that with the advent of Itunes and Ipod sells Apple now feels that moving to Intel, a cheaper platform could attrack more users to its OS than with staying with a dinosour or a PC. The fact that IBM hasn't delevered on Key features of the PPC chip doesn't help IBM either.
2. Simply stated yes. The sales of Ipods and hords of Itune users would at least try the OSX os on an intel PC. Oh god the Support guys...:) Coupled with the fact that Jobs clearly stated that the transition would be completed by the time Longships is very interesting to say the least.
Something in the back of my brain tickles here when I think about this.
Not only would Apple benifit form a OSX any release for x86 but so would MS. The tickle part of this is that MS might be pusing for this more than we would want to think. Lets face it, MS can't even add a media player in the OS at the moment with out being dragged into the courts, whether thats here in the US or over seas, the affect is the same... MS looses cash. Over what a media player?
OSX for x86 would free MS to go any direction they would please, and no one would care. Not when theres competition...:)
MS is screaming for Compition, and Apple is the only company that has been setting them selves up to do so over the past five years. Ever since the release of Ipod Apple has been slowly but surely getting their brand name back up where it had fallen during the 90's.
3. Some of the posts here today have mentioned that Apple would try their hardest to keep OSX on propritary machines from Apple. I"m really iffy about this one. Something tells me that yes this is exactly the thing they will do. After all its Apple. But the devil inside me says this isn't going to be the case. After all the worst thing about Apple over the past 10 years in my mind has been its sole propritary control over everything. Which in affect not only kept cost up, but also kept their install base down. By moving to Intel based chips Apple can lower the cost of production on new machines, which do look cool, and offer a OSX for any X86 PC. Single handedly recapturing a large portion of the educational market that has abandoned Apple for cheaper wintell machines.
4. The large portion of issues with different operating systems, has always been file formats and sharing and trading files. Apple solved a large portion of this when they moved to OSX and a unix based OS. Aka the files are more easly transfered between Win/Mac. By moving to x86 hardware the PC industry is about to get a shot in the arm. MS has lead this affort with its releases of Excel and Word. two key important aspects of any working office.
5. So the million dallar question which I haven't seen anyone address is why would Apple move OSX into a PC platform market that has been stagnating over the last 2 years. This was one of Jobs key slides at the opening of his speach. Is it strickly just cheaper faster hardware? Or as I have stated priviously, a trickier move to compete head to head with MS, hence allowing the Software giant the room it so desperatly needs to again be creative?

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/06/06/milk.terror/index.html
A whole article about how the gov't is trying to stop the publication of a research paper because it would be a roadmap for terrorists on how to poison our milk supply. Then after all of that the writer adds this:
"Under the most likely scenario, he wrote, a terrorist would buy toxin from an overseas black market laboratory, fill a one gallon jug with a sludgy substance containing a few grams of botulin, and pour it into an unlocked milk tank, or into a milk truck at a truck stop."
Way to give out exactly the information that the gov't was trying to keep under wraps.

Personally I would tend to think that they will never allow this. Without proprietary hardware, Apple would be in direct competition with Microsoft, they would get crushed by the software giant.... they would have to transition into more content-delivery and media/entertainment type stuff like iTunes and iMovies.
So yeah, my dream of dual-booting OSX and Windows still seems like it will never become a reality :(

I'd like to give her something that'll last and be meaningful, but I don't really know what. Price isn't really an inhibiting factor (though thousands of dollars are probably out of the question).
and no, a ploughed dirtbox isn't something i want her to remember me by.

They just aired 2 simpsons episodes in a row and wow have the simpsons gone down the tube more than I ever possibly thought they could.
This episode.
http://www.thesimpsons.com/episode_guide/1421.htm and I was just
shocked - it was _that_ bad...... god it was bad - like seriously 2/10
I laughed like twice.
and this episode
http://dyzzy.org/index.php?episode=1309&season=13&sec=media&node=simpsons&page=source
was a tiny bit better - but they tried to cram like 19 different things into the story.....
ok so they start making a whine against too many previews in the movies - funny
then the movie ushers chase homer and he breaks his jaw - ok so the episode is gonna be about that, not movie houses and some kind of protest or something
then homer learns to listen due to his jaw being wired shut
then homer has to overcome his new man-ness and niceness to be nasty again and rescue marge from a destruction derby?!
the episode could've been good but they just tried so fucking much - i swear the writers are on crack
