Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jun 04, 2005 5:09pm PDTSo I've been pulling my hair out a bit on some Shackspace stuff after thinking I could hack it.. and now I think the safest bet is to just wait for Sander to come back from his vacation in a week. I'll just blow the thing up you know? Bummer?

So we purchased an hdtv today. However, the last tv we purchased was 10 years ago. So...I have a bunch of shit I dont understand on the tv like av outputs, s video stuff, etc. I plan to order the HDTV box from dish network tonight, so the sat is current just plugged in to the back of the tv via the cable input. Am I supposed to be using someting else to get a better picture? The picture isn't like awesme or anything, and text appears somewhat blurry. I'm totall lost as to how to get the best picture possible. Also, it's a widescreen.
Help?

Are you pumped for Battlefield 2? Are you sad that the demo isn't out yet? Well, if so, then...
Come play the game that started it all!
BF1942 SHACKBATTLE this Sunday, June 5 at 6:00 PM PST (9:00 PM EST)!
We'll be playing BF1942 v1.61 at bf1942.shackbattles.com:14567 - password is in themelon's profile.
We'll also be using Teamspeak. EVERYONE should be on Teamspeak, at least to listen even if you don't have a mic. We'll be connecting to rydogg1's server: ts.shackbattles.com - no password required. It's helpful to put [TS] in your name (or [TS-L] if you have no mic and are listening) so people know you're on Teamspeak. If you don't have a mic, I've got a spare crappy one, and themelon has many spare crappy ones. We can send you one. Let us know.
Last week we had a very manageable 35-40 people, and the games were great. We've gotten a few BF1942 newbies involved. If you're new to the game and need training or help, I (and several others) will be happy to spend all the time you need walking you through the different classes, weapons, tactics, etc. Just let me know!
We'll be playing Vanilla BF1942 1.61! But the map rotation will also include Shackmaps and the tournament map pack. You can get them at the links below.
All right, here's the batch of useful download links if you don't have them:
http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=4501 (BF1942 anything -> 1.6)
http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=5928 (BF1942 1.6 -> 1.61)
http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=5284 (Shack map pack)
http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=6351 (EA Tournament map pack)
http://www.toldyouimhardcore.com/umax/ShackTraining.zip (Shack training map, which will be running before the battle for training purposes)
http://www.goteamspeak.com/ (Teamspeak homepage)
http://www.redhavana.net/teamspeak/ (cpt_gloval's guide to setting up Teamspeak -- a bit out of date, but still useful)
http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=10065483 (Another utility for those of you that use speakers and a mic with teamspeak.)
http://www.qbnut.com/tso/ (Teamspeak Overlay, puts the usernames of those who speak onto your screen. Has caused some stability issues for a few people in the past.)
Punkbuster will be disabled for the time being.
Thanks to hirez for the bandwidth.
Finally, we played some Forgotten Hope last Monday, and there was some love expressed for it, but neither themelon nor I know which maps work better with the smaller numbers of people (<= 32) that FH brings out. If you're interested in seeing a Forgotten Hope Shackbattle happen on a different night, please feel free to either announce it and hype it yourself (we can make sure the server is running FH) or reply and let us know. I suspect the BF2 demo might start sucking up people's time as soon as it releases, but you never know.
F2 F2!

I've never really held any favourable thoughts towards the notion of using CSS as a replacement for a table, and the inconsistences between browsers and various hacks and what-have-you to make it all work just seemed to be too much to give a shit.
Except now I'm faced with a requirement :( I've gone and looked at many tutorial sites about this, yet not one has an answer for the layout I need.
The layout I need is a 3 column view, with the middle column having a fixed-pixel width, and the columns either side of this to adjust themselves to the dimensions of the browser.
Now, using a table, this is piss-weak easy. Here's what I wrote:
http://www.digitalsedative.com/test1/table.html
This works in both IE and Moz, and serves the purpose. Note how the two outer columns have a different background to one another.
I've gone and TRIED to write something like this with DIVs, but really have no idea. Here's a couple of attempts.
http://www.digitalsedative.com/test1/test1.html
http://www.digitalsedative.com/test1/test2.html
Anyone care to show me how to have a 3col layout where the middle column is a fixed-pixel width? Surely it can't be that hard, right?

Why do some of you keep so much porn on hand? I mean, I understand a few videos or a bunch of pics.. but hundreds of cd's and hard drives dedicated to porn? Do you watch and/or view it all?
I remember a few people who talked about their 200+ gig porn collections. I'm sure a lot of that must be video, but even still. You would need to watch porn 24/7 for a long time to get through most of that, wouldnt you?

Theres a place in Garland called Burger Island that 3dr took me when I was interviewing with them. I've eaten there quite a few times since and love it. The burgers are huge! I decided to take a picture of one with some size comparison:

Take a picture consisting of 3 games:
a) On the left is a game you've been meaning to finish off for what seems like forever.
b) In the center is the game you're playing right now.
c) On the right is the game you're most likely to be playing after you finish the game in the center.

Inspired by Rosewood's post
Oregon Trail MMORP
My contribution, would be a Pirate MMORPG. Covering the entire globe during the golden age of piracy. Some approximation of ship duties would be required, I would think that a PC group of 5 could conceivably control an entire ship. You don't join a race or nation, instead you gain and lose faction by your activites. You could become very high up in the English navy faction and you'd gain access to English repair facilities and English ships. Same for the other factions. Or you could be strictly black and attack everything. Not only would there be sea combat, but you could also try fighting on land etc. Trade skills would play a large role. The players could found pirate towns where characters can get refits and what not. Implement a realistic trading system and some players can try making a fortune selling goods from place to place. Rum to England, ship goods from the Baltics, etc.

One of the neighbors has goats in their apartment. There. I said it. I have heard these horrible noises all day, that sometimes sound like humans screaming. Well I figured it out, and it's goats. Giggles listened out the window too, and she agrees, it's goats.
So before posting, we thought we'd take a walk around the block to see what we could find out. No goat news, as there are lots of apartments around here and we couldn't tell which one it was coming from, but some teenagers did yell "Sir? Sir!! SIR!!!" at me as we walked past their front door. I didn't stop. I wasn't afraid; I had put my Harry Potter shirt on so that people knew not to mess with me. It's a Sirius Black shirt, makes me look like a total badass.
XOXOX,
Billy
