Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jun 02, 2005 6:00pm PDTYeah that Battlefield2 demo stuff should be fun times. I'm really hopeful that they have taken a nice hard look at the networking code for multiplayer which was probably my biggest point of furstration with 1942. Perhaps some robots and lasers too.
- The fire rebels are hot. (HAHA OH MAN!) - A xXx that you'll actually want to see - Rising doctor insurance not due to huge settlements - Dude got a private jet and only paid for coach! - Forgot to mention this one a while ago. Latest Intel + Apple talks - Soon maybe your unborn child can be as beautiful as Maarten and ILastly, Apple is coughing up cash for those crappy batteries in the earlier iPods.

What a difference. I highly recommend the more stylish Shackers to forgo ditching those old pairs and instead go for this.
I saw a comprable pair at the store for $130. I paid $20 for these two years ago.

Patents are usually discussed in the context of someone "stealing" an idea from the long suffering lone inventor that devoted his life to creating this one brilliant idea, blah blah blah.
But in the majority of cases in software, patents effect independent invention. Get a dozen sharp programmers together, give them all a hard problem to work on, and a bunch of them will come up with solutions that would probably be patentable, and be similar enough that the first programmer to file the patent could sue the others for patent infringement.
Why should society reward that? What benefit does it bring? It doesn't help bring more, better, or cheaper products to market. Those all come from competition, not arbitrary monopolies. The programmer that filed the patent didn't work any harder because a patent might be available, solving the problem was his job and he had to do it anyway. Getting a patent is uncorrelated to any positive attributes, and just serves to allow either money or wasted effort to be extorted from generally unsuspecting and innocent people or companies.
Yes, it is a legal tool that may help you against your competitors, but I'll have no part of it. Its basically mugging someone.

What the hell? How did Titanic make so much money? Almost 2 billion...crazy. Never seen it.
At least Shrek 2 didn't pass Star Wars in the U.S. box office.

Recently, I've been getting a large urge to go back into Education. I've thought about going back to do a Masters in Computer Science (possibly Software Engineering), and I'm wondering if it's really worth it.
I know I've missed this years enrolment, so if I do go back, it'll be in 2006 and I'll be 28 (or almost) when the semester starts.
I could possibly get to skip the 1st year (due to it appearing to be very similar to the first year of my engineering degree [which was a waste of time for me, as I hated it], but it would still take up a further 4 years of my life at least.
So, of those of you who are doing CS, or have done it - would it be worth it at this stage in my life?
And, would I be the right sort of person for it - I've always enjoyed problem solving an programming (both together is a win-win bonus).
I don't know much of any high level language (few basic C/C++ structures, and that's it), but I know that wouldn't matter as I would get taught that.
Advise?

Fortunately, it's only thurs-sat, and sundaying is 9-4, but still....

I'm not looking for new civs to play, rebalancers, or scenarios, so much as little tools to make playing easier. In particular, I'd love to be able to plant flags on squares as reminders to myself (i.e, 'build a city here').
Even better, it'd be awesome to have a tool that shows me city borders as I move it around the map, so I can easily see which resources would be in range of my prospective city and how that city's production would overlap with another city's production territory.

But what irritates me intensely is when you hear something new (The Go! team) and can tell its the sort of thing that Pitchfork would give a good review and thus has a particular following. I realise hating on Pitchfork is so passe, and there are probably some smaller music blogs that I should be directing my anger towards, but it always seems like too much of a listing of what people should like rather than a review site.

The script creates a small sticky like post above all other comments notifying if a new chatty has become available, along with some information about the new chatty (title, date, time, number of posts).
http://www.stoldark.com/Shack/LatestChatty/
It isn't persistent, and only runs when a page is reloaded, but if you're like me and keep replying to posts in threads that may have transitioned to another chatty hours ago, it's a nice reminder that maybe you should move your ass on over.

We want to make it a lot like Ravenholm, except to highlight the "zombie movie survivalism" aspect of it even more. Anyway, what we wanted was to destroy the township it's set in at the end of the thing. And I wonder how we could do this.
So I was thinking that maybe the town has an extensive gas supply system for cooking and heating, right? Would it be possible to sabotage this system, so it blows up and starts massive fires all across the town? That probably sounds silly, but I can't think of a practical way to totally ruin a town all at once.

The Fast and the Furious (not great but for action, girls, cars - nice)
Independence Day (didn't get sucked in to the hype - really awesome - I love destruction flicks and it was awesome on the big screen)
Starship troopers (this crowd probably likes it, but a lot of people didn't realise it's satire)
Wild Things (I found the storyline good and twisty - the 3some scene rocked and overall it was good - I also LOVE the soundtrack)
Movies you didn't like but a lot of people did.
The Big Lebowski (I guess I just wasn't in the mood, I found it slow and tedious - also not funny)
Blade Runner (Unlike Lebowski, I've given this one more than 1 chance, every time it bores the shit out me - and know I don't always need action in my movies)
Rear Window (yes I know it's old and I even took that into heart before rating it - I found it predictable and boring - hell it's on the Top 250 but it's really SO boring and predictable)
Full Metal Jacket (only given this one chance like Lebowski - I hated how they built the characters up in the first half then the second half it just seems to go to hell)
and final call...
From Dusk Till Dawn (I thought I was watching the next pulp fiction - it was awesome ,,.. then you know what happened - ugh)
Anyone else got some movies they like and others hate
p.s no hating plz - I'll bite my tongue if you list my favourite movies if you bite yours over my list...

They have an updated retail release (guess you could call it a re-release?) coming out in the relatively near future.. I recently resubscribed for a month to see how it is these days, and while a lot of the old flaws are still present, it's become a much more enjoyable game since the last time I played it (which was probably 1.5 years ago or so). Granted, I haven't been able to fly yet (due to not having a joystick out here.. flying was my favorite part of the game), but the infantry play - which I formerly wasn't at all fond of - is pretty spiffy, particularly if you're coordinating with others via voice comm.
So.. a question for the Shacker masses.. would any of you be interested in a monster post about the game, complete with tons of screenshots ala any of the past monster posts I've done?
