Violent Game Bill Passes in Illinois
by Alec Matias, Jun 02, 2005 6:40am PDTBills have been popping up everywhere that try to limit the sales of violent games to children, but all have been defeated in the court system. Illinois will be the next battleground state as their bill just passed through the legislature and only needs to be signed into law by Gov. Rod Blagojevich.. the same person who introduced the bill late last year.
"In today's world, parents face unprecedented challenges in monitoring and protecting their children from harmful influences. This bill will make their job easier," Blagojevich said, praising the House's 106-6 vote. ... But supporters insisted the government has a duty to help parents shield children from violence and sexuality. "Don't let them become the monsters that we see in these violent games," Democratic Rep. Monique Davis said. Those in the industry don't want to see games become the only form of entertainment media to be under government control, but supporters feel the industry isn't doing enough to prevent Teen and Mature games getting into the hands of children.

There's a current trend in our society to remove the balls of every man and replace them with something that dusts the furniture and covers the scent of bad kitty litter. The idea being that when you're finally "an adult" you can make the decision to watch R movies, read porn, and play shoot-em-ups is laughable. Don't these people realize that's a dream inherent in almost every male since the time he's born? Where is modern man to go to find himself and belong with his tribe? Just a joke here, but when you're taking away all the things that make men feel like men you're giving us a generation of boys "raised by women," the government, and TV like Queer Eye. In the end, the kid who's dad let him be a real man and play DOOM3 will come to school and tell all his buddies about the gore and horror, and he'll gain the respect of his fellow 14 year old buddies (moreso than the dude with frosted hair and a fabulous summer wardrobe.) This law will probably have the effect of glorifying violent games more than anything else.
I guess there's always Madden. (vomit)

Little kids SHOULDN'T be playing M-rated games like GTA, Mortal Kombat, etc.
It sounds to me like the government will be enforcing something that the games industry is not willing to do itself.
The only downside I see to this is that PERHAPS, future games will try to cater to the lowest common denominator... in otherwords, be censored and dumbed down so as t get a nice, family friendly Kids rating.

"Supporters insisted the government has a duty to help parents shield children from violence and sexuality."
Since they're phrasing it that way, you can't respond anymore with "Well, it's the parents' duty!" Of course it is, but now governments could just come back and say "Oh, we fully agree, but we're just *helping* them now."
You could reply that parents don't need the help, but they'd just say, yeah, sure, parents are doing a bang-up job so far. How does one counter that?

...and I really don't give a shit about the ol' parents should just watch over their children more line. I mean I agree with this, but we all know its not possible. Hell, I'm proof of that and I'll bet most of you are too.
Whatever.. I'm from Illinois and I really don't care. If brought to a vote, I'd probablysupport it, even though there are far more important things to vote my support or opposition to IMHO.

If you need any proof of this just take a look at the number of R rated horror and comedies to come out since the introduction of the PG-13 rating as opposed to before.

In addition to this, you think its actually going to stop kids from playing these games? no. Its just going to make it tougher for them to aquire it. Passing this law is similar to the law that says you can't drink until your 21. Sure you can't drink in high school and the early parts of college, but did that EVER stop anyone who was determined to? No. Neither will this bill.

At home, in which case, if you don't want them playing it, you don't let them...it isn't that fucking hard to pay attention to this kind of thing (plus, how did they get the game without you knowing, unless it was a gift (in which case obviously you should deal with the gift-giver) or they bought it with their own money (which would be pretty unusual before 14-15).
Or at a friend's house, in which case, sure, maybe you can't keep track of everything all the time...but you certainly would say something to the parents if you found out your kid was at Johnny's house smoking weed.
Seriously, it's not that hard to pay attention to what's happening. People simply don't want to take responsibility for anything themselves.

that's quite an overstatement. the big bad government isn't controlling content, just handing out stiff penalities if the stores let young kids get their grubby little hands on it. I don't see the problem, but I do think this legislation is redundant if only the previous system had been enforced a little more strictly.

Violent video games in my childhood made me the extremely heterosexual gun-owner I am today.

I do not think you will see developers cutting content out of their games to get an under 18 rating. Too much is at stake for them. Gamers demand the gore, sex, foul language.
Get mom or dad to buy the game for you if under 18, and not much can be done. So I really do not think this will change much.

How exactly do you prove you DIDN'T know someone was 17? Seems like the only defense to this charge would be "But.. I didn't know the kid was only 16 and half. Come on.." Then the only barometer for the truth is whether the accused LOOKS trustworthy.

This isn't inheritantly bad.But what disturbed me was HOW he was playing it.He just put on a bunch of cheats and ran around destroying things randomly with all the best weapons, without even attempting playing the game as it was intended. And I asked if he ever tried the game the regular way,and he said,"Why should I?"
So even if the theme of the game was utterly non violent,I imagine it would be the same answer.
