Made it to Alpha Labs. I'm bored to tears. It's too slow, too predictable, there are too few monsters, the monsters are dumb as fuck, it's full of cheap scares, and cheaper surprises. It's like being trapped on Mars with 500 dead life insurance salesmen.
Sigh.
Am I too old? Is id too old? Because wherever the fucking passion went, it surely isn't to be found either in D3 or what they're showing of Q4. These guys haven't so much lost it as turned into tiresome repetitive farts, telling the same shit over and over: Arrr, me lad, let me tellya the one about the cacodemon hidden in the wall...
After a decade of supporting JC's Ferraris and his rocket habit (and having a blast, too), I won't buy another id game without a demo that removes all doubt first.

Even for the people who didn't like Doom 3, at least try to look at it from the standpoint of the engine. It is ahead of it's time, which explains weak multiplayer in the first place. It should be interesting to see what the extra time has done to the speed of people's computers, the way the developers have used the engine, and the simple fact that HL2 is already out so it can't get trampled by a big title (at least that I can think of).
It seems like Quake 4 will be the first step (I am hoping) towards shutting the Doom 3 hate up. Wasn't all the people's complaints about Doom 3 about the gameplay anyway? I haven't heard anything but praise for the engine and it's features. Way to be open about a unreleased game.

After the laggy Doom 3 multiplayer featuring corridors, small rooms and other enclosed spaces I can’t imagine the engine allowing for a decent multiplayer experience but I sincerely hope I’m proven wrong so I’m not left playing Quake 3 for the rest of my life.
Please make it fast and fun with a vertex lighting option like Quake 3. I don’t care what it looks like, I just want it to run well and be a lot of fun. You might also want to stop releasing the Doom 3 screenshots because I don't think they're having a positivive effect.
Regardless, I'm still stoaked in a very nervous sort of way.

Quake2 had a great raw feel to the controls, Quake3 was too homogenized, and Doom3 is a single player game. Quake4 has so much potential, but could end up being Doom3 in a different outfit.

I also understand that AA support usually isn't added into engines until later in development *cough*HL2*cough* but Q4 is being built on finished, polished tech. So why no AA? Especially considering that MS is mandating AA for every game (horray!).
Please bring back the mega multiplayer DM/CTF/RA experience in all its glory. I know there's some single player stuff to follow the Q2 "story", but that is a drop in the bucket of my interest and hopes.
Fast paced, railgun twitch shooting, quad damage timers. Splash damage. Grenade + rocket jumps. Power shield and... above all.... THE GODDAMN GRAPPLE HOOK.

Maybe the game is very unfinished and they had to rush out this footage,
but just looking at that exploding machine and how the debris looks
flying through the air... it doesn't look modern at all,
kind of like Deus Ex 1 physics.
