Xbox 360 Revealed

Tonight is the night for the Xbox 360 as it is being officially unveiled to consumers via a 30-minute show on MTV. However, many details concerning the system have been leaking out all day and at 9:30pm EST, a Microsoft embargo was lifted that contained more information than a MTV infomercial could ever hold. First, the facts. It comes with a 20GB hard drive meaning there will only be one version of the console (Edit: Kotaku's claim of HD-DVD playback is shaky at best). However, a WiFi adapter is an accessory sold separately but any WiFi adapter will suffice. All games will support both 720p and 1080i. The previously rumored Xbox Live Gold and Silver is true as are the leaked specs. Microsoft will sell a digital camera that can be used as webcam. As for the wireless controllers, they will take batteries at first, but future versions will be rechargeable. As for rumors, a German magazine ran a huge article on the Xbox 360 and the most tantalizing tidbit is a quote from Peter Moore saying that Halo 3 is coming early next year. At the launch of the system will be Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, and Project Gotham Racing 3. The system will arrive a week later in Europe and in December for Japan. New neat features are compatibility with the iPod, battery charging through USB, and multitasking by watching TV, a DVD, and surfing the net at the same time via splitscreens.

  • Well I just got home not long ago and watched my Tivo'd MTV 360 special along with the MTV trailers.

The hardware is obviously amazing. 256GBytes/sec eDram bandwidth and the unified pixel architure along with the triple core 3.2ghz and 512mb GDDR3 ram etc etc etc and i'm sure the bus system between each componant will be extremely fast (something I wish PC's would improve more often).

Software wise, some awesome looking shit along with some underwhelming crap like PD:0 which really disapoints me graphically. I'm a firm believer of gameplay > graphics but if your going to pimp HiDef graphics and make people want to drop money on a next generation system when it's brand new PD:0 footage certainly didn't work. The Ghost Recon 3 footage though looked extremely good (just not my type of game), PGR3, NFS:MW and Gears of War looked pretty good also.

I'm also really happy M$ decided to go with a 20gb hard drive standard and no seperate model system.

I planned on getting it regardless along with a PS3 and Revo but i'm glad we finally got official stuff about it and next week E3 for hopefully a lot more details and footage.

  • I really like the fact that they're supporting 1080i in games (since my HDTV is a fucking pain in the ass about 720p...I mean when I was buying it the specs online said it supported that...but it DOESN'T...and it usually doesn't bother me since its the only one that fit my needs (essentially a 27" CRT HDTV that would fit in an entertainment center that would fit in my room (and the entertainment center is a very close match to my computer desk and DVD/CD holder in my room! I have a whole light-tan (but not near-white) maple and silver sort of thing going on with my newer furniture in here)).
