Late Night Consoling
by Alec Matias, May 09, 2005 8:00pm PDTVisiting the parents today and there aren't many pains greater than doing LNC on your mother's bloated Dell while she watches CBS' prime time crap-a-thon. But I persevere for you to bring you these bits from around the gaming world. Today has been a BUSY day with plenty of newly announced titles as publishers are juggling for position to get primo-coverage for their titles. Don't want your information lost amongst the spectacle of the event! Who would've thought of a portable Black & White, but it makes perfect sense for the DS. The handheld again shows its skill of being able to handle traditionally PC-only titles. Now it's all up to Full Fat to make it not suck.
- Images are not the only things being leaked regarding the Xbox 360. The final specs hit the web, confirming that the memory has been bumped up to 512MB and the 3 symmetrical cores running at 3.2GHz. All games will support 16:9 at 720p or 1080i with anti-aliasing and there will be 3 USB ports on the console. More intriguing are the new Xbox Live details. There will be two packages; Gold and Silver. The main difference is that Silver can only play online during the weekends. However, there a ton of new features that can keep 'em busy during the week. Check the full deal out here.

[xbox] - With the MTV launch report just days away, more and more details are leaking concerning Microsoft's next-gen console. Over the weekend, this image hit the web which shows the console, headset, controller and a camera. Also spotted were these shots showing close-ups of the controller (with what appears to be the Xbox Live button) and the Media Center remote. Finally, via OurColony.net, this picture shows what could possibly be glimpses of the many different changeable faceplates the system will have. Interesting design choices!

[xbox] - Rockstar Games announced today the first title for their Vancouver studios; it's called Bully and will release for the PS2 and Xbox. "As a troublesome schoolboy, you'll laugh and cringe as you stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, play pranks on malicious kids, win or lose the girl, and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the fictitious reform school, Bullworth Academy." It'll be shown in private at E3.

Tiger Hill was co-founded by director John Woo. Demonik will be both a movie and a game, released at the same time. "Clive is known for creating great and horrific villains. In the game, you get to play the villain, and in the movie, you will be terrified by him," said Brad Foxhoven, president of Tiger Hill.

- Nothing official has ever been stated regarding a sequel to Perfect Dark; it's always been rumored, but never confirmed. And while it is still not officially confirmed, guests to the MTV Xbox 360 taping said that Perfect Dark Zero was shown in playable form. Comparisons were made to the gameplay of Counter-Strike and gadgetry of Splinter Cell. According to these guests, the game won't be shown on the actual show this Thursday.
Perfect Dark Zero "Confirmed" for Xbox 360
[xbox] - Nintendo president Satoru Iwata talked a little bit about the online network for the Nintendo DS to Japanese site GameWatch. "Since we are hoping to make this a widely used component of the system, we have decided not to charge monthly fees for our games using the service," Iwata said. "However, in order to encourage third-party software makers, we do not plan on banning monthly subscription fees. We will be establishing a subscription system in which users will not have to worry about being charged without their knowledge." Hot spots will be set up, but how many in the US has yet to be confirmed (1,000 in Japan). Iwata did say that you can access the network from your home WiFi router.

This is very hard to calculate.
MS will loose more money per Xbox sold in the beginning. If the Xbox cost 500$ to produce now they loose 200$ per Xbox sold, but remember, MS will produce Xboxs for 4-5 years and the big volume will be sold in the last 2 years when the Xbox is much cheaper to manufacture.
So, the only way to calculate how much MS loose per Xbox is to wait 5 years and then add up all the money they got from selling Xbox and then subtract the total manufacture cost for 5 years. If you do that, I dont think MS looses THAT much per Xbox. If you then count in the money MS gets from developers I think they will make a profit.
So, in short sight: MS will loose money on every sold Xbox.
In the long run: MS will prob make a profit.

3 3.2 cores? 512 ram? and everything else.. yow. that's a lot of goodies. i may buy one if it has a VGA connection. cheaper than a damn new video card if they stick to the normal launch pricing scheme.

I'll be interesting in seeing if Rare can still pull of great games though. They seem to be in a bit of a slump since late N64 - GC releases. Star Fox Adventures anyone, Banjo Twoie? bleh.

I wrote this up back in the Quake 2 days when it made sense to me.
I think it would have been controversial which is probably why Rockstar decided to tackle it. There is a popular web game where you play these girls that fight each other at a school - the name escapes me though.

If the 360 could support normal USB keyboards and mice, image how cool playing AOE3 on your huge HDTV would be. Between buying a PS3.0 capable card for AOE or a Xbox 360 I'd go with the later in a heart beat.
The improved resolution really changes everything you can do with your console. Web browsing on your TV used to be a joke, but at 1080i and a wireless keyboard it becomes a real alternative for browsing and emailing for a lot of people, perhaps even better than with an average PC. Add in Tivo style PVR functions and you've got an absolute killer platform. Ah, maybe I'm just dreaming. I've never owned a console before, but the Xbox 360 has me interested.

I wonder if it is suppose to mean there is both a LAN port and Wireless on-board or simply that it only contains Wireless and the "ready" portion indicates additional hardware needed.
