Unreal Tournament 2007 Preview

by Maarten Goldstein, May 04, 2005 8:34pm PDT

Over at 1UP you can find the Computer Gaming World preview of the next Unreal Tournament game, which was previously only available in their magazine. The article is chock full of quotes from the guys at Epic, and there are a few screenshots as well. Unreal Tournament 2007 (or whatever it might end up being called) will include new game modes, drop some old ones, and will also have an improved singleplayer experience.

"The original Unreal Tournament was on the threshold of being a great game," Steve says. "If we had done 2K4 without having to feel kind of in the box of what we had started in 2K3, I think it would have been a much better game than it was. We think there's a lot we can improve. This is a completely new game, new engine. All the code is really being rewritten. No assets from UT2K4 appear in here again. In fact, in terms of how the games have evolved, this is more of a leap, I would say, than the original Unreal Tournament to UT2K4."

Ok so my understanding from quickly reading the article is that they are developing the game play (level flow and tweaking weapon damge / movement) with the new engine in place but without art work.
THATS GOOD professional online fps games shoudn't care about graphics just gameplay...
    Sounds ok but
if they are trying to save time, surely it would save more time to develop it all on the ut2k4 engine, where all the tools etc are 100% complete, and all that could of been done whilst the new engine was being written.

No offence to members of epics development team (i will not name names) but at least 2 of your employees are not the brightest of sparks as shown to me on inet boardcasted interviews and such.
I am not going to get into any arguments about this, if u don't believe me watch move videos on the net of the staff showing off the game.... remember just imo i do not mean to offend. (i include the nicness imo as this is not a freedom of speach forum and i do want my post to be posted)

and yes i agree with some one on these forums, STOP allowing so called GAME DEVELOPERS to develop (now i will not say games here heh) first person online professional shooters.

OK level designers on ut where made to make the roofs of levels low and to put annoying bars across the ceiling to stop players from moving around with double jumping etc... its a fact. that is not game design, O OK we DESIGNED our game this way but we don't like players acting in this way , lest make it annoying for them to do so... WRONG WRONG WRONG
Carmack stated hating bunny hopping in his game (remember it was a bug)
Which gets me on to a whole other topic.. quake the game that started it all (online fps) Was in my mind the best online fps ever, BUT WAIT it was LUCK, just LUCK, the 6 dm maps that shiped with the game where an after thought, a couple of level desingers had spare time and put them in, and don't think for a minute that they are genus in design (well they are but its luck that they are) as the designers didn't know about bunny jumping, or more importanlty rocket jumping. its luck it all works so very very well.

If there are trying to make the game sucseed to a profession gaming market then let the best of the professionals develop the game, as they truly understand the game play.
They understand what is requiered for level design, as they develop tactics for all the played levels out there.
they understand game design as they learn all the game rules (weapon and armour spawn times, spawn points) and then use them in game to win.
they put far more time and have a way higher understanding so help them tell the devs.
I tell you when this is done, the company that does it first will have THE profession online game.

Get thresh, lakerman, blue, sujoy, repitle, fat, zero1, get these guys.

    point 2.
I used to play Quake3 myself competativly my major problem with ut being a "pro game" is simply that it is WAY TO SPAMMY, i play ut2k4 and if you are honest i think u will argee with my point, there are times and they ocurr far to offten that you get kills that you didn't even inten on getting. With the rapid fire high damage of the guns, you do just get kills that you didn't mean to get or required almost no skill for you to get them.

    point 3.
Competative "PRO GAMES" REQUIRER a high frame rate, i am concerned looking at the screen shots that people are not going to be getting high enough rates, so there will not be enough people to compete with there fore not a good competative scene.

ASk yourself who are they really developing for, fact is that they need sales, sales come from the massess, the non hardcore.

I am getting really bored with O better graphics, what about gameplay....
