Late Night Consoling

by Alec Matias, May 04, 2005 8:00pm PDT

The retro/active article from 1UP that took a look at Loaded brought back some memories from my early PlayStation days. Of course, back then I was one of those obnoxious grade school fanbois and I had a bias against the PlayStation for absolutely no good reason. Then one afternoon, just days after the console launched, I tried out the system at a Circuit City and was immediately hooked. I sold my Sega CD (for $400, how?!) and bought that shiny new console with Battle Arena Toshinden. Now, I know these days we all look back and laugh at that game, but man, I was just flat-out flabbergasted at what I was playing. I spent days with Twisted Metal, Warhawk, and Jumping Flash. However, I think a defining moment came during my first half hour of Resident Evil. Dogs through windows. Enough said! Anyone else have a moment like that?

  • First Details for Onimusha 4

    [ps2]
Onimusha producer Keiji Inafune spoke to a Japanese magazine and dropped a handful of details regarding the next Onimusha. It will be a true sequel, following the story set by the past games, however this time set firmly in feudel Japan and having nothing to do with time travel. Its biggest change will be the "free camera." "The camera is totally free this time," says Inafune, "and this gives a message to the player -- feel free to move about as you please. We're giving you a stage, and you, the player, can run about freely." On top of this, Inafune emphasized that the action factor will get a boost. Hopefully there will be more details at E3.

"SSX On Tour allows players to create their own boarder or skier and take them from a wannabe to a mountain rockstar. Players can get noticed in all-new shred challenges where they earn an invitation to The Tour where they'll face the best racers in the SSX cast. Fly down the all-new tracks, and master the new monster tricks for both boarding and skiing to make it to the top of The Charts." It'll be available this fall.
  • Latest OurColony.net Pic

    [xbox]
OurColony.net keeps on leaking out the goods with this latest image. Obviously there aren't many clues to go on, but many are speculating it's a screengrab of the boot-up sequence of the Xbox 360. Ya know, the one that Xbox Live's Director of Programming, Major Nelson, said "it's really cool and goes by very quick...so quick that I asked to see it again."

  • I think the defining memory for me as a gamer is also one of my earliest memories: I still clearly recall a single moment of playing Space invaders with my father on our Atari 2600 (I still have the original warranty for it). This was way before I was even five years old.

After that the next biggest moment was when I finally figured out how to use Mplayer to start playing Quake 2 online. I missed out on the apparent orgy of gaming goodness that was Quake 1 because I grew up on a Mac. In any case the ability to actually play against real people hooked me in a way that no single player game has. I was stuck with a shitty 28.8 kbps connection and so I could never get into railgun play. Instead I relied on the splash damage of Rockets in deathmatch to make up for the lag, and to this day I am a total Rocket whore in any FPS deathmatch I play.

The next really big moment was probably when I picked up my brand new PS2 on launch day. I preordered it and waited at Funcoland’s door before they opened anyway. I when the employee’s got there I demanded that they give me the first PS2, before they even were able to ring one up for themselves. I got Armored Core 2 and tore that game apart. After that I became disheartened by the total lack of anything else worth dropping $50 on and vowed never to buy another game system at launch.

  • When I first got my Atari 2600 (actually an Atari Jr.), I wasn't allowed to play on Saturdays until 9am. So one morning at 7 I just couldn't stand it any more. I went through the house and turned all the clocks to 845. I figured I couldn't get in too much trouble if I started 15 minutes early, right?

Well I'm downstairs playing Donkey Kong Jr., and I hear my mother's alarm go off. Yeah, she always has been an early riser. And me? Busted bigtime. But was it worth it? YES!! I got in quality game time then went back to bed after getting into trouble.
