Shacknews & FileShack Expanding
by Steve Gibson, May 04, 2005 10:28am PDTSo it begins. Our humble plans of making things bigger and better that we've been working on will finally arrive this month. The short summary of this is here:
The partnership between Fileshack and Limelight will greatly increase the reach and scale of Fileshack's services. An expanded geographic and network footprint will encompass nine new locations, two of which are in Europe. Fileshack will also triple its public capacity and quadruple its subscriber capacity, as well as increase 'shackspace' for subscribing members to 1 gigabyte. [snip]So there you have it. We're gonna stick our necks out here and go for it! Wish us luck! We're pretty sure you guys might have a couple of questions but here's a quick hitter for the major points
- All support is being replaced, there will be a cancel button! - No change in base pricing, more 'tiers' and payment options though (paypal etc) - No planned downtime outside of a few minutes at like 4am - Shackspace and Shackmail will be getting new interfaces. Your Shackspace files will be copied over. - All existing customers will get that 1GB storage mentioned in the coming weeks.I'll try and answer a few of the other major questions in the comments for those of you who are just really curious.

Where does the current Mercury subscription stand on the planned tiers? Is it the full deal or bottom rung in the new scheme of things?
My main reasons for going for Mercury were:
1. Support the Shack
2. Have the option of getting in on any exclusive betas, etc.
Web space isn't really so important to me and I find myself after very few files these days. I'd be pretty miffed if the exclusive betas were only available on a higher tier. Can you confirm how this particular aspect would work?

This is all well and nice, but I've never had a reason to sign up for Mercury and this isn't changing my mind. Why?
1. Exclusivity. Throw some weight around, Steve! When was the last time you were able to procure any exclusive agreement? How's the FEAR beta coming along? To begin with, it's rare that I find a closed beta that I'm unable to get into by some means without a paid subscription, let alone one Shack's hosting.
2. Server loads. The longest I've ever waited in line was ten minutes. Yeah. That was an agonizing wait...
3. Speed. When the downloads start, I usual hit over 200k temporarily. For most files, by the time it caps out at 200, the damn thing's done downloading.
4. Shackspace. I have my own webspace. I post in ER and FP on occasion. What more do I need?
I truly love this place. It's always open in a Firefox tab. It keeps me posted on news. I get 99% of my game related downloads here. If it began providing a service above and beyond this that I personally found useful, then I would gladly be sending you the whatever amount per month. But I'm not seeing it yet.

i remember back in 1999 when i first found shugashack.com and the impact it had on me as far as gaming and being exposed to many things on the internet that nobody should ever have been exposed to...

Some cynical things for you to ponder...
Most people in Europe are only on a 512mb connection. Fileshack is already too fast for us, so there's no real incentive to pay a subscription fee. Apart from the lightning bolt.
I'd like to see more competitions, with overseas shipping so us European shackers could take part. How about overseas shipping for Mercury subscribers only?
As a non subscriber i'd be happy to see this happen. I need more of an incentive before I give you some of my hard earned cash.
I want to subscribe, but why? To get a lightning bolt next to my name? Offer services and they will come!
I certainly will, but I want to see something for my money.
Sell me something and i'll buy it shack!!
Right now if I subscribe, if I send you money everymonth I get nothing. A lightning bolt and faster download speeds than my connection can handle.
I'm not the only UK reader here!

Shack was always BIG in my book, but it's nice to see it getting BIGGER.
Just don't forget we are gamers, and we don't like B.S. marketing. B.S. advertising, B.S. support of advertisers, or B.S. reviews.
Shack has always been a no B.S. Gamers site. Please keep it that way.
I get more out of this site than any mag i've ever signed up for.
Pay the fee and support the Shack.
Thanks for the GB.
tried to make a copy of the borked page and name it worked and give it this song but i suck.

www.limelightnetworks.com
the 9 server locations is just a launching point for us, there will be more locations coming as soon as we can put them together. you can see a network map of the locations we're looking to expand to here:

limelight hosts a few other things you're probably familiar with. XBoxLive for MS was just announced yesterday, and Steam for Valve is another.

pure genius
I don't care who asks for my money once a year as long as I get my keen lightning bolt and my ADD inflicted no-wait times on the goodies servers ;)

Fileshack has been an invaluable resource for me in getting all of the patches, maps, and mods for up on all of my game server ports.
Thanks
